Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I am talking about the majority of murders in the US. Not a tragic random act like a mass shooting. Criminals mugging people at gun point. Gang violence. Robbery with a murder. Breaking & entering with a gun. Most gangs in the United States acquire their guns on the black market, which are illegal guns brought into the country. Until there is a way to stop them from being brought in, and to somehow find and confiscate any that are already here, I don’t think it is a wise idea to ban legal firearms. I don’t know what crime is like in Hawaii, but many pockets of urban areas in the continental US have turned into war zones with rival gangs and innocent victims of their crimes. 🙁
Crime is low. We have strict gun laws and Aloha. Hunting is something people do to put food on their table. No one looks down on the hunters who provide.

The dystopia and hysteria you paint is sad and tragic and brought on by the gun culture. You need to fix your problem but adding more guns is like sending a diabetic to a candy store. What is the purpose of a legal semi automatic? Kill raccoons? What is the thought process??! With more guns than people in the US where are the illegal guns coming from? Mexico's fine economy?

Edit: I don’t want to derail the thread, but thought it important to bring up my experience in working in a city with youth. Illegal guns are a huge problem, and people owning a legal firearm often do because the crime rate has spiked so high. I could tell stories…one of a young girl who woke up with a man who went through her window when she was asleep. Her father went out and applied for a legal handgun the next day. I am in no way what I would consider an advocate of guns, however I don’t think it fair to tell people here they cannot or should not own one if their community is not safe (whether because of human crimes or wild animals).
You sound VERY much like you are an advocate for guns. Like honestly, thinking the solution to the problem is adding more problem as a solution. Maybe the dad should get his daughter a nice dog and a security system. Surely it would keep them safer than the off chance they will be waiting for a bad guy with a gun.

Again, I have family who work in getting illegal guns off the streets. What good would a dog do against a bullet? And removing police and reducing funding isn’t making the cities any safer. Many areas of the US are safe. Until you live/ work in one that isn’t, I don’t know if you can comment on what goes on there and say that a dog will keep you safe.

A dog will bark and alert me to the problem way before I can predict it and then I can be prepared.
Maybe being asleep is what gets people's guns stolen.
Since you have family in the business I'm sure there is a statistic on how many illegal foreign guns they have confiscated vs American guns. Be an interesting fun fact.
No one has cut or de funded the police. Maybe it just sounds that way. I don't know. I don't get my news off of facebook or Instagram or fox. Plus police are state funded. May want to talk to your state reps about that one.

This is NOT in support of guns. For the record... Jan 6
Whatever else it was, Jan 6 is not very a very good example of gun violence

https://news.yahoo.com/armed-insurrection-weapons-did-capitol-220000760.html

Short version is 82 of 670 people charged were charged with weapons related offenses. Five of the 82 were firearms. Of those, one wasn't in the city until hours after it was over, one was a DEA (drug enforcement agent) carrying his badge and gun, two were stopped for breaking the curfew afterward (edit to add: slow getting out of town or back to hotels, evidently.)

None were fired. (I think none took them out but I'm not sure about that.)

The other 78 people carried "deadly weapons" ranging from a desk drawer and skateboard helmet to knives (6), tasers (5), and pepper spray (13), to poles (19) - (usually flag poles for the flags they carried).

And tax
Checking out the nests on this fine day (last week)...

K. Anyways I am getting way off the mark. Sorry peeps. I am just offended by the camo bravado that has cropped up amongst the privileged victims in America. So sad to have a roof over our heads but hey, lets complain. Life is tuff and I hate not getting my way.

Off subject political response (first amendment) tax.

Well, glad they were disarmed and or did not get to their stash https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/12/oath-keeper-weapons-firearms-jan-6-hotel-00061449 that definitely helped

I'm getting close to being willing to risk losing my chickens to zoning enforcement by letting them out where they can be seen. For one thing, I think the risk is getting smaller. It seems the local makers of the rules are moving from their extreme anti chickens positions.

I'm in an odd situation in that I don't think I am in violation of the zoning rules. But it is because of an oversight rather than intention. I haven't been willing to risk the loophole being closed.

They spelled out the rules for keeping chickens on properties in the various kinds of residential zones - basically, not allowing chickens on any of them except the two most rural kinds (which have quite stringent restrictions like numbers and distances from property lines.) They seem not to have considered that some residences are actually in commercial zones. Commercial says nothing at all about chickens.

We look more rural enough that I think no one will care to dispute the issue if the times (or kinds of people on the zoning board) have changed enough that they are no longer adamantly against chickens.

So, now I'm thinking about how to set up .... something. Probably, I will do a run..

Nutmeg thinks she likes the idea.
