I agree with you it is very hard to take pictures with one hand while feeding the chickens.

I am right handed and taking pictures with my left hand and it didn't work real good.

I keep the camera in my pocket and what I often find is when I've been fumbling around in my pocket for something the settings get changed and by the time I've got the right settings in place what I wanted to picture is over.

Picture tax, Janice and Kraai were last to return to the coop.

I also keep mine in a pocket, but in a case, and by the time I've got the case off, the settings may be fine but the moment's still passed, so there's no winning way with this conundrum!

Two hours today. A couple of degrees above freezing with grey skies and the wind winding uo to the 50mph gusts forcast for Sunday.
They did come out but stayed in the allotment run mostly apart from a quick foray onto the allotments for some proper grass.
They go through 450 grams of feed this afternoon, a bit less than yesterday, so I assume there was feed left from overnight.

Dig thinks he should be roosting up a tree. Can't fault his instinct. If there were other trees with low branches closer to horizontal I imagine I would be fetching him amd Mow out of a tree at dusk. I think the others have been coop living for so long now they would prefer the coop.

Henry went off to roost before I had fed them their treats for the day so I fed him on the roost bar. You can just see a couple of roast beef crumbs next to my little finger. Getting pictures one handed takes more practice than I've had obviously. By the time I'm sorted the moment has gone.

re picture 2, it's not obvious what Fret's genes have contributed to Dig's appearance except a bit of barring on the dark feathers; he's really very like his dad. Are most of the Sussex genes dominant? I don't know anything about lightbars or other sussex hybrids. Can you elucidate?

Fret is a Marans Creasted Cream Legbar mix. She's got more Marans shape than Legbar but she did inherit Legbar colouring. Henry is a good example of a well bred UK Light Sussex in looks. It seems that most of the Legbar got sidelined in both Dig and Mow. Get rid of Mow's head tuft and it would be difficult to see any Legbar in her. Maybe the Crested Cream Legbar genes are weak. It's not a subject I know much about. Given I don't believe much about genetics when it comes to personalities. I've had too many chickens that have been nothing like what the genetics rule behaviour indicates, which is what I'm interested in, I haven't read up much on the topic.
Mow is quite interesting because she's got oversized Light Sussex pantaloons. I'll try and get a picture that shows them.

So you are a bit colder than we are, our lows have been your highs. Although, being from Vermont, I see no point in being below freezing and NOT having snow, but I don't miss driving in it and of course now, with the chickens, I would be worried about their little feet and other bits freezing off.

We are just outside of Anderson. We are about 5-6 hours (sometimes 12, due to I-85 fun..) from Nashville. We have, periodically looked at more rural places in TN, but the property taxes are higher, but it is more wooded and you definitely get all 4 seasons. I could without summer, I would be happy with spring and autumn year round. ;-)

I probably worry about the chickens in this weather more than I should. We just don't have that much practice with this level of winter. Fortunately today kicks off a regionally appropriate warming trend

We're 30 minutes out of Gatlinburg, < 3 hours from Anderson. I thought about moving to SC, to the low country, before meeting DH. It's a laid-back state, and I love some mustard-based BBQ But the mountains (and work) called and pointed us to Tennessee.

How old becomes a backyard chicken.

Not the sort of weather one wants to be standing in a wind swept field in! Supposed to be 12C; didn't feel like that to me.
Got them fed, watered and out of the run for a bit and then the rain started and everyone, including me sought shelter in the coop run.

This picture shows the different feather pattern between Carbon and Fret. Fret is much more Marans like in shape. Fret also has Marans type feathered feet. Not really much in common apart from being shades of grey and similar chest colouring and of course the head tuft.

This is Mow. She's got the head tuft and that's about it on the Crested Cream Legbar front.
Mow is a complete fluff ball. She's got the head tuft but it's closer to Fret's than Legbar. I have no idea where the feather texture comes from, it's incredibly soft.
She's got feather feet and Henry's oversized rear end. Hardly any leg showing due to Henry's contribution to the heavy thigh feathering.
