Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Knowing a lot less about sexing than most folks here, but I see nothing that says male on your picture. Why did you think it was a boy initially ?

I was wondering what are your plans this time ? Are you going to try to keep the two cockerels as long as they get along and eventually see if one can replace Henry or will you cull them as soon as they are of age seeing how it went with Dig ?

Mine really love chards too. It's crazy what they will do to try to get under the netting we put to protect them ! I limit how much I give chards for the layers now compared to a few years ago as I've learned it's high in oxalate inhibiting calcium absorption.
We also love chards and we've been eating a lot, A LOT of it, seeing how are summer veggies have been so late !

Mainly because it started off behaving like the two males right down to the chest bumping. The other female didn't do any of that and her behaviour was so obviously different. Maybe the darker likely female hadn't made her mind up then.:p

I'm going to wait and see what happens. The rescue cockerel is an oddball and may just be odd enough to fit in without too many problems. The white cockerel is most likely dinner.

Your flock is growing nicely Shad.
1 rooster, 3 hens, 2 pullets and maybe another cockerel to keep.
Congrats!

Even if Carbon doesn’t make it for another year, you still have a wonderful group to be proud of. :fl:clap

... and not an incubator, or broody coop, or even much involvement on my part. All the credit goes to Fret and Henry.:D

Broody coops don’t work well for me/my chickens either. Experimented with a tiny incubator last time for spare chicks. But that didn’t work.

I do miss a bantam Fred here. Hope to keep a bantam Amrock cockerel.

I definitely have one boy, maybe 2.

Chances are small one can stay. Trying to with the mini-coop which muffles the sound/has no windows, only ventilation. And is located on a better spot for the neighbour who complains.

Have I shared my new coop here? This one is an Ecoflex by New Age Pet. Was pretty straightforward to build and easy enough to attach to my current setup. Hubby is a BIG fan of plastic coops now, he says maybe we'll get a Nestera in the future.

My broody hens are incubating their eggs in there now. Tomorrow will be 14 days. :) I must say, having a hen do all the work is definitely a plus!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you.

@BDutch I am still raising mealworms, and I should probably post a V2 of that article.

Very good article.

I'm going to start my mealworm tank up again.

This seems like an easier way than I did before.

Thanks.

I would love to see version two.

It really is!! I had two hatchlings that didn’t make it past their first week (appeared squashed/smothered—that doesn’t happen in the brooder!) but otherwise the broody experience for the surviving two keets has been a delight.
