Four hours today. It rained over night and this morning. The field smelt lovely and fresh and some of the green that the sun had turned to yellow looked like it was trying to return. I didn't do a lot. Chatted to a couple of the other group members and wandered around with the chickens.
The chickens are getting back to moving as a group which I'm pleased about. It seems they've all accepted Fret as senior hen and there's been a lot less bickering.
What I'm keen to avoid is them viewing me as a substitue rooster. Not quite sure how I'm going to go about this.

Do you think they want you to fill the rooster role or that they just like to use you for safety while you're there?

The birds are much more casual about safety when I'm out with them. They'll wander in separate directions until the roosters try to herd them back together. Though even the roosters are far more relaxed when I'm there.

I don't mind that they look to me for safety, particularly since they switch back to full vigilance when I'm not around. Seems like they zip under the bushes for naps the moment I head back to the house.

Thank you for the IDs!

So Fret is CCL (or part)? I don’t think I’ve ever noticed her crest before. ❤️

Edit to add: and Mow also? I just saw her little tuft.

Fret is a Marans/Crested Cream Legbar cross. The obvious give away for the Marans donation is the feathered feet.

I don’t get ads either. It’s lovely.

It’s just those freaking suggestions over on the right on YouTube. :barnie
Like this, I assume:

Usually a video I might watch (like the Handel or the satire about famous youtubers) and then some stuff I won't watch at all.

I think it's something inbetween. I bring/find them food and I herd them. They seem to like being herded and it helps Fret keep them together. I've made it quite clear that Fret is senior by greeting her when I open the gate and not the others, as I did with Henry, making sure that Fret gets the first treat food and herding the others to where Fret is rather than herding Fret to where they are. I do a few other small things depending on the circumstances. The rest pick up on this. No Fret, no treats is very obvious. This gives her staus in everyones eyes whether they think she should lead or not.
None of them crouch for me thankfully. Sylph still jumps onto my lap most days and it doesn't seem to be about food or sex. Remember Sylph was fond enough of Henry, probably because not being in the so called pecking order he treated her much like he treated the others. I think Sylph likes the contact and the fact that I'm very tolerant of her.
Fret is most aware of the safety I provide. She will head to me when she's not happy about something, Tull is starting to understand this as well.
