Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

A new mystery: all three older pullets are dozing on a roost outside the coop. (They’re inside a fully protected and locked run; just not inside the Nestera coop.) They’ve been there for a hour and a half. This after they routinely stand in the open doorway at dusk, calling a straggler to come in and join them.
I had a similar ‘problem’ with all my youngsters in the passed years.
A few hens don’t tolerate juveniles to roost with them in the extension where all my chickens used to sleep.

My run is not very safe and open (netting on top).

I added an extra coop last year hoping to solve the roost problem. The mother (Ini mini) and her big ‘chicks’ went to the new playhouse when their brooder-coop became too small.

Now my chickens are divided over 2 coops and there are all safe at night and I have no problems around roost time anymore.

We have several of these eco-ducts in the Netherlands. Most of them are a bit smaller. 74 in total : https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_ecoducten_in_Nederland

They were build to make it possible for wildlife to travel from one small area to another small area. The Netherlands is so crowded with people, houses and roads which make such eco-ducts necessary for the wildlife population.
We’ve been working on this on Interstate 40 where it winds through the Smoky Mountains between North Carolina and Tennessee, but it has been impacted by the massive damage from Hurricane Helene. It’s an opportunity to add corridors during the rebuild (assuming that we get the funds that were promised in 1924 2024.) (feels like it was that long ago)

Cute video (“C’mon, baby!”) at the beginning of this. I can’t find a way to just post the clip:

Thank you very much :hugs .

It’s human nature to make mistake. The hardest thing is when the animals under our care have to deal with the consequences.

CogBurn was absolutely beautiful! That second photo especially, the light has fallen perfectly on his face, one of, if not the, prettiest chicken photos I have ever seen
Thank you!

I am running low on my summer fragrance… 7% DEET:

We can do without such fragrance in the Netherlands. The numbers of insects (including mosquitoes) reduced to 25% bc of all the poisons used by the food and flower industry.
For sure can't notice this in my bedroom at night with all the zooming going on. Maybe I should not have chosen to live near so much water

Yesterday night was the first time the silkie mom decided to sleep with the rest of the flock again. Now the chicks just stay alone in the second coop they were raised in. They are a few days past 5 weeks old now. I think Perris mentioned before that their brooder raised moms leave the chicks earlier than broody raised moms.

Also I am wondering if my CX pullets are either grooming my beard or trying to eat it. Especially the white Hubbard "grooms" my beard, but sometimes she will pull a bit hard. So now I wonder if she is actually trying to eat it.

What kind of essential nutrients are residing in your beard ? 😇
