Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Indeed. And it varies with the male; some have good instincts for it, and some don't, as with hens. I also think it helps chicks' development into sociable adults when they have both good and bad examples to observe.
Im not so sure about the bad examples. It seems that the social behaviour within free ranging chickens in tribes isn’t that far off from human behaviour. And its clear to me that the some real bad examples have a very wrong influence on teenagers. Just think of Andrew Tate as influencer. 😑

I think some people learn from bad examples how NOT to behave, perhaps more than the number who think it's something to emulate, and I just extend that observation to chickens.

Was the damage at the allotment bc of storm Amy who came over from the Atlantic? No one else in Western Europe had damages? How did the tree huggers coop?

We had a lot of trees who fell over in the Netherlands too. The main airport was closed for several hours. But where I live is not near the see and in my town there weren’t any problems.

Oof! I’m sorry you lost the tree! What kind was it? Did it provide much shade or shelter?
Some kind of willow I think. It did provide some shelter but it also blocked a lot of growth potential of the apple tree it fell on.

What a sneaky rascal! They are far more intelligent than most people give them credit for and I would guess far more intelligent than most of the humans that judge a chickens intelligence.

That is not a nice surprise, but hopefully, with the roots still intact and safely in the ground, the tree will make a come back.

That is a lot of birthdays in close proximity, good thing you like cakes! Your SIL looks to be an excellent baker. Is that Orange with almonds or walnuts with chocolate icing?
Tangerine covered in chocolate.

I think the more we learn about the other species on the planet the more similar to humans we will discover they are.

Willows are almost impossible to stop growing. If you saw off a willow trunk to 1.5 metres, you will get a pollard willow from which you can remove branches every 2 years to weave a wind screen or a fence, for example. With thin branches you can weave a basket. 🧺

We have a crooked willow in our garden which grew too high. Its cut of at 2 meters 1.5 years ago and needs trimming this winter.

March 2024 preparing to take it down:

I think that was the idea before the person who planted it lost interest.
