I have been thinking about maybe getting a young heifer to raise for a milker. Holstiens are very available around here for cheap but I might like a different breed. Just NO BROWN SWISS!....Phillip ruined them for me.

Share pics of your milkers?
What breed is she?
What do you like most about the breed?
Good production?
What do you feed to keep up production?
Is there certain feeds that make the milk better?

We have raised beef cattle but never a dairy breed. we've only ever had 1 nanny cow, she was retired & given to us but was dry. We do currently have a pet heifer (beefy) that could probably be milked(if she had a bull calf..*gone!*) were not sure shes pregnant, but she does seem quite rotund and the bull was always with them up until we sold him in November. If she is this would be her first calf. She was orphaned as a baby, still not sure which one her mom is/was.

I have been trying to buy a milking cow. I really like the mini jerseys but they are hard to find. I thought about a jersey. I have looked at several of them. A neighbor has a dexter for sale right now. She is 18 month and is bred. I wish I had pictures to add. I hope others do.

I have a Jersey Dexter. She's still young, probably about a year now.... She's going to be a milk cow. We feed her alfalfa pellets... Dexters are small and pretty good milkers. I don't need 5 gallons a day. We only drink a couple a week. About the meat cow.... They are really not good milkers. A. they will not give much at all. B. They will not give milk for more than 3 months w/o a calf and might not let down for you. A dexter would be good as a small family cow. Try this forum:

Good Luck
