We've totally gone way off topic for this thread. But i just wanted to show you my new chicks

I picked up these 4 from the farmers market on Saturday. They're 'village chickens' meaning they're mutts but the guy pointed to some adults when i asked what they'd look like and they were pretty looking with different shades of red, brown and black on them so hopefully these will feather out nicely. So now i have 6 chicks, but I'm keeping these ones apart in case the bigger ones kill these baby ones. And I'm going to get a few more next Saturday - hoping to get a good mix of different genes. I really want some Brahmas but the only chicks i can find are always mutts like these. I'm keeping an eye out though. I can tell this is going to become addictive......lol

lols i wouldn't keep them apart when they are young is the best time for integration you just need to keep an eye on them the first day but the ages are so close you shouldn't have a problem until the roosters rear their heads. here are mine chicks believe it or not the bigger chicks are only 1 week older then the smaller ones and they get along just fine. but as far as Brahmas go i think the only way to get pure breeds is though a breeder

I've been putting them together under supervision and they've been mostly OK. But yesterday i left them for a while and when i came back the biggest one was pulling one of the small ones around by it's beak,. so i separated them again. My friend, who's dad has chickens, was saying he saw one getting pecked a lot by other ones and it was bleeding. He said to his dad shouldn't you take that one out till it gets better and his dad said if he takes it out when he puts it back the others will kill it, but if he leaves them they'll sort it out themselves - and they did and now it's fine. But I'm scared to do that because these smaller ones are so young just now - 4-5 days - and I've already lost my first chicks so I'm feeling rather over protective with these new ones. I'm going to keep putting them together under supervision till the smaller ones get a bit bigger and we make the tractor for outside, then I'll stick them all in there together and hopefully they'll all be friends by then! But if i get more this Saturday I'm going to just stick all the younger ones in together and they'll probably all be fine.

yeah the only time your should worry is when you see blood but as long as they have plenty of space (2ft per bird) they will figure it out them selfs

I'm having a problem and it's worrying me. My eggs are at 16 and 14 days. The air sacs aren't as big as they should be. I just put in more water and added a sponge. They are alive and growing but the air sac isn't. And no, I don't have a reader for humidity.

I thought small air cells meant too much humidity in the incubator.

There isn't much water, I add every 3 days.

How many channels are you filling? I only fill one and it keeps perfect humidity and I live in AZ where its dry. Some people who live where its wet don't fill any channels and the eggs losing moisture throughout the hatch is enough. Look up "dry hatch".
