i seem to have the worst luck with exploding eggs the first hatch i had i was viewing an egg when i dropped it and it exploded on me and this time. last night around 3 i smelled a horrible smell in my room and tracked it to the incubator and found out it was coming from one of the egg's i didn't see any movement so i put it in a baggie to crack it open and as soon as i turned around bam-o rotten egg got all over the counter. But it looks like the duckling piped on the wrong end through a vein the duckling had to have done this a few days ago to have the smell that bad.

But for the good news the other 5 egg's have all piped but the first wrong end pip seems to have gotten shrink wrapped so i will give it another day if it's still not out by tomorrow morning then i will intervene. some weird has happened with the egg's though all the egg's have external pip's sense yesterday but none other then the wrong end pip have tried to zip yet.

I wish i could show you all pics but i found out last night that my camera ran out of juice and that i was out of AAA battery's long after all the local stores closed. so my dad is out buying me some as we speak.

That sounds awful! lol Glad non of mine exploded! Hope all goes well for the rest of your hatch!

This is the chick that i assisted. All of my other chicks started hatching at 5am day 21 and they were all out, apart from this one, by 5pm. By 1am this one still hadn't pipped but it had internally pipped days before and was tweeting loudly, so i made a peep hole and stuck it back in the incubator expecting something to have happened by morning. By about 6am, now day 23, still nothing was happening so after reading and rereading the bit on assisting hatching, and after asking for advice on here, i decided to go ahead and start zipping the shell manually. I picked the shell off with tweezers and the top came off. I wrapped it in a dampened paper towel and stuck it back in the incubator and waited......and waited.....and waited......i was advised to peel back the membrane although i think maybe i shouldn't have, and i waited some more......and finally by 5pm day 23 it got itself out! It's now in with the others, although i'm a bit worried because they're pecking it but they're also pecking each other too. They're all still in the incubator because the wee chick is not fully fluffed up. I'm going to move them all to the brooder when i go to bed, hopefully the red light will stop them pecking each other so much.

Anyway, here's some pics!

Took about 12 hours from when i opened up the shell for it to come out on it's own.

That's it in the middle lying down. All my chicks made it!!

peaking each other is normal for chicks you shouldn't worry until you see blood

I keep seeing all the posts about peeping on the wrong side. How does this happen and how can you prevent it?
worng end pips happen when the chick mispositioned it-self in the shell before hatching. it has very little to do with the way they are incubated it is a luck of the draw most people hatch dozens of clutches without ever seeing one and some hatch out almost nothing but wrong end pips but it is fairly uncommon and most chicks that do a wrong end pip live to peep about it

it is only fatal to the chick if it pips though a vein like mine did, it zips to fast though a vein or if it tears open it's yolk sac.

They've all settled down now, i think they were just curious meeting this one for the first time. It's all fluffed up now, it's got a black spot on it's head. Here they are

It's the one on the front with the wee black spot on it's head :)

My also improvised brooder ;) I've got a smoke alarm there because I'm so paranoid about that light, it's really hot!
yeah tha's why alot of the heat lamps bought at most stores have clamps so they don't fall. Just keep an ear out for the panic peep if they get to hot.

well good news
this little one hatched on 9:37pm and the other one not 3 minutes later

they will be in the smaller inside brooder until the rest of there siblings hatch

Aww look at their wee webbed duck feet! I saw some ducklings at the market the other day, was considering getting a couple but we don't have a pond . I guess i could fill a bath with water or something, but it's just more things to clean out....

ever sence i was a little kid i have wanted ducks they are so cute but i never had the means to do so until now the way i'm going to work with the water is have a kiddy pool up on a platform and a drain on one end that leads to my fruit trees. easy clean up.....i hope

That sounds like it will be easy to drain and refill, but it will go all green from algae so you'll have to scrub it out too! lol that's what i mean - just more work!
