Yes we do that:-( Im going gung HO this year on it-starting my plants early and all inside!!!! problem is we still have frosts in late MAY!!!

Look for wall-o-waters. They are kinda expensive, but you could also make your own. They will keep your plants from freezing with those late frosts, and they water them and pull and keep the heat from the sun in the soil.

I know those Ill look! This year Im going to start small and try a few good plants of
beefsteak toms
grape toms-for chickens
peas
basil-thyme-oregano
squash
zuchinni
pumpkins
cucumbers
radishes
carrots

thats all and see how well it goes

If you are going to start plants inside, start your tomatoes about the first week in Feb, otherwise it will be really late until you can get them outside.

BEAUTIFUL MUGGS!!!! Mark does all the gardening! He loves it--My chickens do enough work for the compost pile he turns! LOL I am not a gardener of flowers but would love a garden and I suck at tomatoes too!!!

I still try...every year. I'm going to have to start my plants inside like C and J...instead of paying $5 for a tomato plant. I can't wait to use the alpaca and rabbit sh*t pile. My friend gave me a "recipe" for tea bags. Sounds completely inappropriate.

If I remember right....you can use the rabbit droppings right on the garden...we do...I think it is call, oh crap..I can't remember what it is called...no need to compost it...the veggies in our garden do great with the rabbit "stuff" I am now giving it to a friend ...she is composting some chicken "stuff" too....I wish I could remember the word for the rabbit...my mind just isn't as it was..something cold or something...sorry but it can go straight on...I once had so many flowers in the spring people slowed down to look...yep I can remember that smell,,,,how many acres do you have Muggs....?

You can grow anything down here-as long as you water it daily. No wonder so many people have plastic flowers!
I can vouch for Brindle's Crinum, I have a few from her that have grown big, hope they put out some flowers this year. Actually got a few last year, which is unusual for them if they're moved.

I love daylilies, but the chickens at them. Maybe I'll try again sometime.

We are under 1 acre! With a farm of 100 + acres for sale directly around our property. Are you thinking "instant manure"? Alpaca and rabbit poo can be used instantly. We'll see how well it goes this year. The alpacas poo in one spot, so I go out with my shovel and wheelbarrow and scoop it up. The alpaca boys come right up to me and watch the process. I know they're judging me for saving their poo, but I'll get the last laugh during shearing season!

C...we are going to try that this year...rototilling the chicken poo and shavings into the beds. We used manure from an old cow poo compost pile and tilled that in the garden bed. It really didn't help. Nat...how are you at growing cukes? I can't grow those worth a darn either.

I couldn't believe how much the chicken poo helped. Guess I shouldn't have been too surprised since I saw how lush and fast it made the grass grow after we moved the tractors. I definitely recommend chicken poo for making your gardens grow better.

It does make such a difference. As soon as everythings done in the garden the chickens go in there, everyday. Then the next spring we till everything. We have had everything grow much better since we started doing this.

NO the fertilized dirt...why should I be putting straight poo in it???

We take the shavings and all and dump it on, then grind it in when we till. It made a HUGE difference in our tomatoes and rhubarb last year. Actually it made a big difference in everything.

Yes, I dump used shavings and turn it over into the dirt with a shovel. Great stuff! Sometimes I also scrape off the top layer of dirt/chicken poo in the pen and distribute that in the garden.

I grew some musk melons and water melons a couple of years ago, right after Ike. They did OK. But you can really only eat so many cantaloupes. They took up a lot of room, too.

We can't seem to grow pumpkins at all because squash beetles get 'em every time and I don't know what to do about it.

Our main problem is birds and rodents. Everything eats tomatoes!
