Sometimes when a particularly rambunctious chick is a early hatch, they manage to get out of the nest. If there is not much of a ledge they may manage to get back under the hen before they chill and loose motor function. Some broodies will abandon the nest to respond to the calls of the chilling chick, dooming the rest of the hatch. She could probably hear both the pipping eggs and the cold chick. It is may not be so much a case of bad mothering, as instict prompted her to stick with clutch.

I live down here in Florida and dry incubate, sortof. I have around 30-34% humidity, and around 99.7 temp. Lockdown around 70%.
Now we're kinda at sea level here, and if you live at a higher elevation I know that hatcheries that are at a high elevation add O2 to their incubators because the air is thinner. Another thing is atmospheric pressure. So I think it pays to order eggs from higher elevations than you may have (anyone is higher than me, LOL). What do you think?

Lovin, I came home from work this morning to some sadness too. In one coop, one of my SF cockerels had his neck twisted upside down. He was alive, but was in a bad way. I euthanized him, I didn't want him to suffer . Then I go to let my silkies out of another coop and one of my girls is laying in there dead. I don't know why. There's been someone pooping green, but I couldn't figure out which one because they all were normal, eating and drinking. I figured maybe the broody, but it wasn't. I have no idea why. Could it have been the heat we've had for the last few weeks? They are in the shade. I just don't know.

Lovins, I'm sorry one of your chicks didn't make it. Hopefully the rest of the will.

Seminole - OMG - what on earth? I'm so sorry. Could the crow have been in there hassling them trying to steal eggs, or something, and made them overheat or injure themselves?

No, both were in locked separate coops for 2 days since I worked. Both coops are very open with hardware cloth.
The SF must have injured himself somehow and twisted his neck. No outer injuries. The silkie-I have no idea. But I guess it was her that was pooping pale-ish green poo that was large and fiberous, but all they ate was feed. She appeared to be eating and drinking , and looked normal yesterday at 5 when I checked them all before work.

Anybody else think there is something wrong with this? I mean I get that $400 (what the auction is at now) is less than half the price of the selling price of the last set, but to inflate the price to as the person above said "Protect my investment" just seems wrong to me, I mean $400 is still not cheap... not in the least for most of us. I know they said kidding, but I don't think they would have said it had it not been somewhat the truth to them. You know. Am I wrong here?

I'm wondering also how much truth is in that statement.

edited for poor wording

First there was a statement on the first auction that anyone that bid a penny would be subject to receiving old eggs, now this statement by someone else about protecting an investment by not wanting anyone to get the eggs cheaper, leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and can't understand why someone would go ahead and spend that kind of money. I could build a nice coop for that price. We snarks have dealt with some really nice breeders here, that have been fair and reasonable with us, and had some fun as well. At $55 an egg with this kind of controversy, I would spend my hard earned money elsewhere.

I had a huge thing written but deleted it to keep myself out of trouble. I will just say that I agree with you Sem. In the end he isn't really going to be helping Gary any either if he just gets a lot of people PO'd. It's a shame.....

Well hopefully I'll stay out of trouble by voiceing an opinion based on statements that anyone can look up and read themselves.

how long do you think it will take

I was very reserved as I didn't want to interfere with Dan's auction. Why he is even having that conversation on Dans auction is beyond me

inappropriate to say the least...
