What happened to the BCM pip? Was it dead when you checked?

Yah the BCM's never made it, dead in the shell and I had to cull an eviscerated Cochin this morning, "helped" 2 out of the shells this AM, one was fine, just stuck the other was malformed from the waist down. So, unfortunately I had to take care of it. I ended up with quite a few so at about 2 bucks a chick? No complaints. PLUS still have all the ducklings and the "conehead" Polish as my friend calls them are the cutest things!

I spent a mint this Spring on the BCMs, much like you did when trying to hatch the BLRW. I am a believer in the theory you read on here that Maran eggs are harder to hatch. Out of 3.5 dz hatching eggs in various hatchings from different breeders in different parts of the country - I ended up with 7 alive....7!! One was culled, one sold (had a twisted beak) one I am keeping she has a twisted neck but does not seem to bother her should be able to lay fine - 3 roos - one hen that has a weird tail - much like an ameraucana (slopped down) 1 normal hen...1!!

Some pipped on the wrong end. They hatched later and longer than all other eggs. I think this breed does not ship well and takes very specific conditions during incubation. I had 6 maran eggs in with my barnevelder hatch. I hatched 13/14 barnies and 1/6 BCM....go figure!!

OK end of rant

Just wanted to validate that I think it is the breed not the breeder or hatcher

Hey I openly admit that my humidity was ALL over the place, but I returned the bators to their ideal location and I had an almost perfect hatch on the others and not ONE BCM? That tells me the breed is persnikity too. I have NO DOUBT that CottageGardens eggs were of the highest quality. But then again next year I will have a Rcom suro or a Brinsea Octo Advance EX... then we'll see who wins... me... or the eggs... MWAHAHAHA.

Brindle, ya think??? I've gone every which way with this bird! It should lay an olive egg so we'll see! Thanx for the opinion!

wait until you see the eggs-I get 4 a day now-fertilized? Thats the question I have a set of testers out there now with 1 wthchristi--she bought my split lav eggs and I sent her 5 olive eggers-I have the girls in with a FBCM roo so the resulting chicks will lay olive eggs as well! one of the girls laying lays green eggs but not faint green-like frog green so cool -the eggs are a tad small now because of being pullet eggs so in a few more weeks they will bigger and I can send Brindle a nice batch that Ive owed her FOREVER...LOL...!

Frog green sounds really neat!

What the heck are those?

They look just like leghorns but are black with random white feathering. Very very pretty.

Very pretty! What is the gene responsible for that coloration? Is it like an Ancona?
