I so sorry for your loss. I think it's a hawk. i lost 4 buff orp in 1 day, usually you find a puff of feathers if it's a bird attack. weasels kill and just rip off the heads. check the predator thread for help.

I'm so sorry about your flock! I hope you can solve this quickly.

Krista, let some time pass before you make a decision. Letting them out like Hoppy said would work, at least they could be out a bit every day before dusk. It's sad, with chickens, you're always battling something.

I found this 5 year old picture the other day. The baby just turned 5 on July 29. Buttercup

Since Henrietta got hit by that hawk, a couple of redtails have moved into the neighborhood and live here full time. The girls only get to come out into the big yard when we are out there to supervise them. They have a small coop and a big pen. The pen has obstructions all around it so a hawk can't hit them in there, but the backyard is a big open space. So they only get to come out while we watch. They just have to deal with it.

OK, Please allow me a rant.... for months I have been trying to get show quality LF cochin stock. I finally got some LF black and have 5 beautiful chicks. When I came back from MI, I got a surprise. The 2 girls are both black mottles, not black. they are they only girls. The other three are black boys. I sent the breeder an email with pics and am not getting a response. I swear its like yanking your own teeth out trying to deal with some of these cochin people. Tom Roebuck being the exception.

No, but this is a well known "reputable" cochin breeder. Maybe he's just busy. I am just feeling frustrated. This hatching business is a crap-shoot and I waited quite a while for 2 dozen eggs, and to not get a single black female....well....I guess I could breed to mottles to the black boys and get splits. Meanwhile, I have Ameraucanas coming out my ears.
