I think it's just cochin breeders. Though I finally heard from the breeder of the pullets in question. He doesn't know if they are mottled and a few other breeders I showed the pics to say maybe/maybe not. Bluemottie did say lighter marked young birds are better as they do get increasingly lighter with age.

OH NO - you've caught the illness.

Saying silkies are your new breed is like an agility person saying their next puppy is going to be a border collie! You've gone to the dark side! IIIIIIIIIIieieeeeeeeeeee!

Had to put the roo down today. Took it to the vet they are sending it to Cornell for Necropsy. They are not sure, but he thinks latent mareks. Waiting til tests are run. My flock is on permanent shut down until further notice. No birds in or out. I only hope I have not compromised anyones flock. The vet says there are some weird viruses hitting birds this year in Northern New York including EEV, West Nile, Mareks, and even Avian Malaria... The Malaria seems to be attacking our owl population. I won't know for a bit what the diagnosis is as soon as I know, you'll know. I am under lockdown.

I hope he is wrong and it really is something else. Let us know and tell us if we can do anything to help. Good luck and positive thoughts coming your way!

He only had paralysis in one leg, but then started doing this weird gasping for air thing. No other signs, no ocular, the other leg was fine as were the wings, no other paralysis. Just massive weight loss and the leg and then the air thing. It could be anything neuro but Im not taking any chances. I feel guilty. Like I failed the bird, like I failed as a breeder. I have birds that went out and I PRAY that it's not Mareks. We have had a really bad infestation of mosquitos this year. The vet said to have hope. He took a blood sample before he put him down and is sending the bird and the sample out to the lab, potentially even to texas. I am not sure what the cost will be, but it's worth it. Unfortunately I had almost $700 in car repairs this week too and my savings is drained. I'm a little down and out so forgive me if I'm a little absent for a few days. I think I kind of need to collect myself.

ahh Im so sorry hunny.. my fingers are crossed it is all just flukey things and nothing is related to diseases. The gasping for air thing-mine do that on occasion too but Ive heard alot of peoples birds do that not often but often enough to notice and think ..whats up?
