YES! YES! YES! Sounds like this is going to be a good incubation!!! What day are these on?

Do you have any recent pics of your split chicks? Just wondering how they were coming along. I know your rooster is non-bearded (correct) but your black hens are all bearded. Have you been happy with what you are getting? Just curious what your thoughts were on how it was working out... It must feel great feeling like you are "MAKING" them.

My little spraddle legged chick seems to be doing somewhat better this morning. I band aided her legs last night and it wasn't great watching her flop around trying to figure out how to balance herself. She seems to be getting along much better now. She has curled toes as well, so today I'm going to make some little chick shoes for her and hope that helps. Hoppy had a great suggestion as well, so if she isn't still improving by tomorrow...i'll give it the ole college try with the cup method. I've got my fingers crossed.

Here is a question though, if she gets through this...would you guys/gals let her in your breeding program? I'm assuming that spraddle leg is not hereditary, but I don't know that for sure... Do you know?

Okay, you must really be in the ZEN hatching zone lady. I countdown minutes from the time I lock down.

That, or you started the margheritas early...

I wish about the margheritas!

jen before you cull, try my method of hobbles.
take a piece of foam padding, cut 2 slits in it spaced apart the width of the legs. foam should be a depth of how long your chicks legs are. basicly put slide the chicks feet into the slots and then tape around the entire outside edge of block of foam trapping the legs inside. now place this block of foam, chick attached, into a deep cup that will hold the foam from tipping over. if the feet are curled, take a piece of packing tape, cut into a rectangle, sticky side up, put chicks feet flat on this. then over the top, spread the toes and tape across the toes. now tape front to back around the foam block except where the chick is sitting on the block, then insert chick and foam into cup. the chick can't move from this so it will need to be fed and watered. I normally do this over night, then in the morning, untape and see how chick is doing. retape for a few more hours if needed but generally by morning they are doing very well keeping feet flat and legs in the proper position. the hardest thing is to get them taped in so that they don't get their feet out until you are ready (or fall over)
if it doesn't work, you can cull later.

This is similar and easier than something I was going to suggest. Its like little chickie orthopedic braces. I would leave them on for a while if the chick has severe problems (like 3 days) and just make sure it has food and water within easy reach.

thanks, Nava! I'm really hoping for a great hatch, too! But one tom will make me happy!

How old are they when they are mature and have those pretty feathers. Our fair is in October and I'd love for my girls to be able to enter with a Royal Palm.

That would be SO cool and VERY impressive!

They are on day 14:-) I would love their top notches bigger-but their toes spacing is amazing-almost everyone of them have perfect toe spacing! Ill go take pictures right now-It does make me totally happy that they are my silkies and not others:-) lav roo not bearded all hens are-the chicks al appear to be bearded-1 or 2 are iffy??? Il be back

I got a spraddle leg as well. Took nylon surgical dressing tape and taped legs together. Then I'll have to work on the curled feet. Or can I do both at the same time?

Nava, I'm so sorry about your drowned chick. No matter how careful we are, sometimes crap just happens anyway

Had a bunch of barred olive eggers this morning! I didn't count - just loaded up a big handful of fluffy butts and put them into the brooder! Still hear lots of peeping!

None of the blue eggs have hatched yet, but I think a couple are peeping. Today should be day 21!

I put them in with my 1 to 1 1/2 week old bantam cochins and d'uccles and they looked like I had introduced horrid aliens into their world.

You wouldn't think tiny chick faces could be so expressive!

One of these days I need to get a hatcher.

spraddle leg can have many causes, genetic like hip dysplaysia in dogs to having slippery substance in the brooder or under developed leg muscles due to assisted hatching or not pushing enough with the feet to get out of the egg. so would I keep one out of my breeding program, probably not. hip dyslasia would probably cause more problems down the road alerting you to a real problem (hens might be more seditary, lame or walk oddly, roosters unable to breed). if I noticed any of these problems, then I would not put them in the program and I would think these would all be visible prior to chicks reaching breeding age.
because chicks walk upright, hip problems would be more evident then with dogs that walk on 4 legs.
