Awww, Congrats on the GOOD hatches April--but, hey, don't give up on the Wellies--if you can wait till fall, my BG (Big Guy - future head roo of my next generation) will be old enough to breed & I will send you some Wellie eggs for the cost of whatever the shipping is to NH. Just make a note & remind me, OK? or even next spring, because my Wellies are a permanent part of the family & they won't be going anywhere. I'm working on my NPIP for this fall, when my youngest start laying, & then I will close my flock. (actually, it's closed now, unless I just hatched all Ameracauna roos (knock knock knocking on wood!)

I tried for several hatches & like you, I've thrown in the towel on the Marans, just can't get those suckers to hatch for love or money & believe you me, I've thrown plenty of both at 'em. I have one--ONE Marans - Frannie--she is a Cuckoo but she lays an egg darker than some BCM's I've seen - but I have no roo for her.

On the other hand, finally got some good Welsummers - mine are mostly Channing Grisham lines from 2 different breeders, 2 lay a very dark egg, 1 lays a dark very speckled egg! (my husband, Mom & egg customers fight to get one of her eggs in their carton, lol) & one is so-so.

I have two 8 week olds from the 2 darkest egg layers mentioned above -- my own "first generation" -- a roo & a pullet. BG (Big Guy) is really looking good, and I've been told I have some very nice Wellies, now I'm working on darkening my egg colors down to "Copper Black Marans" dark. So if you want to be part of my "project" let me know. My Wellies are friendly, laid back, good layers, and nice 'eye candy'.

Congrats to everybody else on a beautiful weekend hatch---it's been beautiful here-- probably our last really nice "spring" weekend before summer heat & humidity set in.
I have 6 Dipsy Ameracaunas on the ground & hopefully will get a few more pips but even so, am happy with the results - looks like all splash & blues right now, but they aren't dry enough to really tell yet. I'm happy!

edited for spelling--staying up all night watching eggs pip does not make for a sharp mind!!

I would love to "participate" in your project. I also had planned to work on the egg color and keep my egg basket varied. Out of 3 dozen Marans I have 5! Yes 5! one is not thriving...we'll see. The wellsummers just are not coming out at all. The last order I got there were a lot of clears. I have 4 of those the roo I kept is the one i had to help out and now i see he has a weird leg. Prob. going to have 3 hens and no roo.

I think both during both failed attempts it had to be the eggs because the other orders in the same bators hatched like 75 - 80%. The barnevelder went 13/14!!

Am trying one more batch of marans 8 eggs going in today from Bargain

Keep me in mind though. And thanks for reaching out!

Just took a minute to catch up. I'm running around like a nut trying to get all the bugs out of the new hatcher. The big Lexan window is not level enough on the wood face,( can't get the humidity above 55) so I had to sand it off more even...went to use the sander-no sand paper!!

So it's ANOTHER trip to Lowes to get sandpaper.

I still have to finish the brooder/coop. But I figure, they need the hatcher before the coop, right?

BTW- Do they really make an adapter so you can plug your bator into your ciggy lighter in the car???

I'm gonna have to look into that 'cause I can move into my new place on May 1st, but the bator won't be empty till May 15th. And my roommate is getting nasty about having "chickens in HIS garage" I told the idiot that they will be inth the COOP, not in his stupid garage, and the space where the coop is sitting now, is MY parking space, that I pay for. SHEESH, it's so frustrating to be around people who don't understand chickens.

I can't talk to anyone but you guys 'cause everyone else thinks I'm crazy. I can't tell you how great it is to have you and know you are all right there when I need you....if I ever lost internet, I think I would die....

Ok enough whining, it's off to Lowes with me.

Yeah, folks look at me funny, too, when I get all wound up about the chickens and hatching. It's ok. Look what they are missing. And I agree, it's so nice that the folks here "get it"!

what a day! It went from 65-70 to 45-50 in a hour! brrr--shorts and T to sweats! I just sold off the last of my little chickies-45$ for 11 of them-4 weeks old. I needed the space though...Then the people spotted my frizzle and wanted to buy her! I said nooo way it took me a year to get her! LOL... But..I do have 2 of her eggs that I will hatch out for you:)? Of course they said yes so Ill put them in bator with the rest of the mix-why not!? haha

Im glad everyones hatches went so well this week-we are hatching out so may it's sick! LOL...Imagine if we pooled all that $ and spent it on a an all inclusive trip to the bahamas at 1000$ a piece for 7 days and 6 nights!

the guys in the breed/gender section all say hen, but I am thinking roo

Nat your roo looked like a hen to me at 6 months

Now I am totally confused.

Well today I rehomed 4 faverolles to this young man who has pet steers! I have seldom been in the middle of no where, but this house was in the middle of no where. 2 mile dirt road into the woods. Unreal. Ponds and everything. Of course I forgot my camera. There were a group of steer standing in front of a pond with 2 calves sleeping.

Gotta work tonight.
