I think you could do either with them. As I said I put 45 in the bator and 44 of then were fertile!

When you say "pretty good" job. Let me know if there is something I should do differently or better.

Please let me know how they do for you. I'll have my first long distance grand-chickies!!

to both of you. Don't beat yourself up, accidents sometimes just happen. It is sad, but it was just a very unfortunate accident.

So sorry guys. Stuff like that happens to all of us and it feels dreadful because we care, and think it is out fault. But just think of all the ones you have saved and have to love.

I had a raccoon attack yesterday. I was planning on moving Hoppy's splash BLRWs to their long-term outdoor pen at the weekend. Wish I had done it earlier, but they were still in a smaller cage as they were still being taken inside in the evenings. This smaller cage has slightly wider wiring. Darn raccoon ripped a wing off one, and a wing tip of another. I had to euthanise the one that was badly hurt. The other is OK. At least the one that died I think was a boy.

As for the double pipper. This egg was 2 days pipped and not progressing. The chick was not shrink wrapped but seemed tired. I think it had been turning in the shell and was exhausted. Also it was a bit slimy/smelly. Anyways, I cracked the shell a bit more for it. It was totally in the wrong position, but worse most of the yolk sac was external. I tried to push the sac in but it was crying too much. I think I may try to tie off the extra sac and pop a suture in to close the hole in the abdomen if it is still alive after the kids go to bed. Will probably have to cull though because the chick is just not "right in any way. Just feel it should have a chance. Sort of hoping it won't come to that though. I have a collection of chicks that really should never have been saved.
DH is complaining about me hatching more chicks. Only intermittently realizes that is is real therapy for us hatchers. I did sell a bunch of chicks - BLRW and Mille fleur D'uccle. I let them go REAL cheap to keep numbers down (and DH happy), and I am sure this guy will be back for more. He seemed really nice and he knew he was getting very nice birds.

Sorry about your bad spell.

Here's a quote from Horsefeather's hen, Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers. It helps me understand why things are the way they are

"........Rita was sick. Her abdomen was swollen to nearly twice its normal size, and she walked very oddly, rather like Phoebe of the Striped Wings times ten. Side to side she went. The Ones with Great Hands made concerned-noises each time they saw her. Fatima knew that Rita was dying.
On a particularly hot and sunny day, Fatima had a sudden realization during her twice-daily dust bath. A Great-Handed One might have called it an enlightenment, but Fatima was cross with herself for thinking of something so deep during what should have been a nice, carefree dust bath.
You see, Fatima had seen Rita and the Small Ones side-by-side. She realized that death and new life go wing-in-wing, and that in order for the young to thrive, death must exist also."
