Not too loud so far. He sounds sort of like a wild jungle animal (well he is really) and not immediately identifiable like a rooster. I am hopeful we can keep him

.

and Sem, We hatched these guys out so they are pretty much imprinted and very friendly

that is what makes them most fun.

EVERYBODY has posted great happy pics! They did indeed make me smile. What great looking families and critters!

Nava - I do have a question. Where does the pony sleep in the house?

Dak, When I was 11, extremely long ago and far away, I had an old Tennessee Walker named Charlie who was kind of a hard head and frequently wasn't too keen on having his hooves cleaned out. He would try to pull his foot out of my grasp as I was cleaning it, and I would try with everything I had to hang on. Of course he always won and would literally flip me over onto my back because I was hanging on so determinedly. Then, while standing on 3 legs, he would carefully turn his head to see where I was laying on the ground with the breath knocked out of me and hop sideways while holding the one leg up so he wouldn't put it down on me. I learned how to ride on that horse and as a consequence could hang on like a tick. He was always careful not to actually purposely damage me, but, dang, that horse had opinions!

I loved that old horse. He died at 27 yrs old.

Brindle, A horse like that teaches you alot! My mom was a true horse woman. She was one of the first women in harness racing. She would put me on the nastiest horses. Horses other people wouldn't let their kids ride. I, too, could hang on to anything. Funny though, can't stay on at all now. One little buck and I'm eating dirt. Trickle is race bred on mommy's side and performance on dad's. She is a bit high spirited

I think my first broken hip has her name on it.

Mine was a horse named Beau, a 1/2 quarter horse and 1/2 thoroughbred that came to me as a head shy auction horse that had been sedated, then we figured out he'd been beaten. I worked with that horse for HOURS everyday, in the end he was sold to a rehab for special needs kids when I went off to college. Those horses do teach us a lot, and I cant wait to have enough land to have one again.

Later we had to sell our horses because we lived out of the country for a while. A couple of years after university graduation I bought an abandoned horse that was up for auction. Sweetest little Morgan cross mare. Kept her until I was 38 and sold her to a family with kids that just loved her. I never fell off her, not once. I road a friend's horse for a long time and came off that horse once when it shied sideways and I was bareback. After it figured that out it tried every time. I had always wondered why my friend had asked me to ride it. I road that horse for years until I was stupid and was riding bareback again and it shied and I landed on my butt on an asphalt road and had to sit there for a while before I felt like getting up. Figured I was getting a little old for that kind of nonsense. I'm sure a horse could take a step forward, now, and I would go splat and make a big, messy, spot on the ground!

Yeah, the riding part is secondary. I need my horses so I can just go smell them. Best smell on earth!

Well, I had always wanted one, ever since I saw one on a farm when I was 6, and I figured if not now when?

So got some eggs off ebay. Pea eggs do not travel well and can be tricky to hatch so I ended up getting quite a few. If you can get them locally that is MUCH better. I do now have a fav ebay seller that always send eggs that develop (15/15 this year!!)
Chicks are very needy and imprint very firmly, and will cry all day until you pick them up and carry them around, unless you have more than one, or give them a chicken chick buddy, which is a good idea as the chicken chick will teach the pea to eat and drink.
The chicks need a higher protein chicken starter or supplement with egg yolk. They also need heat for longer than chicks, more like 6 weeks. Otherwise that are like large chickens!! They do need a lot of coop room unless they are free ranged, and they do need to be regularly wormed if kept near chickens. They come in lots of colors now due to mutations. I still think the india blue is the most stunning. We love them

. I love their call as well. So far our boy does not seem too loud and hopefully we will be able to keep him. They sound like a wild bird, not like a rooster so less for neighbors to complain about.
The peafowl section on BYC is awesome.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

PS ......if not now when?

There are a bunch in the equine rescue out here, including foals. A "breeder" got his herd taken away due to neglect.

Whew, so many replies

Pasos and gaited horses are probably rare in NY, most people go for regular horses. They don't know what they're missing.

Dak, my first horse lived til 37. He had the life of a king, he will always be remembered. Some sure get old, huh?

Lovin, mine is a Tennessee Walker mare. Love her. But she does the same thing with her feet, yank, yank, yank. I ended up building her a stock so I wouldn't get hurt. It got better, but now with a farrier, she's behaving, well, mostly. Her mule does the same thing. I can hold on to her better, and she has mostly given it up.

Phage, in NY, one of my neighbors had a peacock. I just loved hearing him, it was such a cool sound. It just made me smile.

Dak, your horses are beautiful. Is that you riding? Your view is beautiful in the background.

Cindy, can't wait to see the box, LOL. Here's a pic of the one that bloomed, and Mary, pics of my D'Uccles, who are sooo cute, I moved them to my patio.
