The barnevelders are more my hubby's project as he looovvves them. I am trying to learn what correct "type" is right now, so we can work towards the standards for the breed. You guys have helped me so much, I knew you all would give good feedback.

Yes, I believe they are double laced, with some having better lacing then others. I have 7 pullets (5-6 month old) and one roo (5 months). I bought 3 of my pullets and my roo from a breeder (goes by Cowgirlgrace on here) from Gig Harbor at a day old. She had beautiful birds. They were Kelly Cratty lines (I think this is from Christina Ledford?). I then lucked out and was able to buy 4 pullets from Kummer Poultry Farm. He is considered by many to be one of the top 5 barnie breeders in the country. Lucky me as he lives in the neighboring town. He was soooo nice and helpful. I learned alot in only 2 hours and am very thankful for his time.

I have many different breeds of chickens, many close to nice flocks now. The tough part is deciding how to focus our time (and money

). I like them all, lol. We know the barnes will be keepers. We also have coronations/ Split coros, b/b/s orps, buff orps, lav orps, bcm and blrw. I think the silkies (we only have a few) and large fowl b/b/s cochins and silver phoenix (we have a nice trio of each) will be sold. My olive eggers(when they are big enough and if they are girls) will end up with my bcm flock and then I have about 25 assorted layers as well (all hatchery birds).

Our goal is under 100 birds by by September....its hard as most we hatched and raised from chicks. I have better pics of the barnies lacing I will post.

Do ya'll want us to bring a pinata? Something for the kids to do if the grown-ups don't care to. Or something for every one to take a swing at! Ya'll would have to supply the baseball bat - I don't have one. If the grownups decided it was theirs, I was thinking of getting a buch of those little bottles of booz to stuff it with.

I'm not sure how much breakage would occur!

Spet 29th I will be 39!!!!! what a good bday present for me with you coming!! It just keeps getting better!! I have all the bats you need-Im on a softball league ( in playoffs now too-#1 baby!!) been #1 for 5 years running-woo-hoo- ok nough bragging. next....the little bottles of booze would be funny but I think once Gretchen or Bob get to bat they'll be toast-or shoot Lovins will kill it!!! Not sure how many people are bringing kids??? havent heard much about the kids

Love the lacing on the Barnevelders!

I have to agree about the dog names. Every Australian Cattle Dog has some stupid Aussie name.

Everybody seems so busy. Try leaving home for 3 weeks, leaving things at the mercy of my husband. I may get caught up in 2011. Both the incubators are turned off, however.

I've stopped counting the chickens. Causes an anxiety attack.

Thank you.

I did get to see the chicks that hatched while I was gone. One has crooked toes. Is this usually hereditary or due to incubator issues??? A GLC roo I think. I don't have the heart to just cull him, but hubby decreased the roo population around here while I was gone, and I'm expecting a show quality GLC roo to be shipped in in Sept.

Glad to see you all again.

I finally turned off the incubator a few days ago. I may due one last hatch in September, we will see. All of my shipped eggs due in July were pretty much awful, only a few hatched out of LOTS of eggs. Decided it was time for a time out.

It sounds kind of weird, but raising chickens is almost therapeutic. There is something calming about walking out to the coops and watching the birds strut there stuff. Things just seem somehow easier.

I topped out at 130 after all my spring hatching. I am down to 90+/-. The goal is 30-40 for the winter. Deciding who stays is tough. i need a laying flock for eating egg sales...but some of the breeds I hatched for fun are very attractive...

So I feel your pain. I wish I really did know who is going to lay the best.
