might be ok, might add plausible deniability.

Hey all you northerners!! I need some cold weather advice. Here in Pacific NW it has decided to snow and freeze and get really windy all at the same time. Our snow here is very wet, and quite unlike the snow in other areas. The windchill is supposed to be in the low single digits tonight and tomorrow, with temps the coldest they have been in Nov. for 20 years.

My hubby and I moved all of our girls and boys into our two big houses (12x12 and 10x12) and he spot insulated them to keep the drafts down. We use stall dry in the bottoms of our hen houses. The main coop (my layer flocks house) has 16 hours of light and my breeder house does not. My hubby put a 250 watt bulb in each house tonight to keep the temps reasonable, it is about 3-4 feet up in the air in each house. The birds were closed in there houses tonight to keep them comfortable.

Is this a good idea or am I teaching them to be wussy, sissy birds? I have lost too many this past month and I want to keep them all healthy, happy and not frozen popsicles. I know the posssibility of losing power exists here so I want them to be able to handle cold temps without dying, kwim?

Any opinions would be appreciated. (They will be opened up at 5am when I go to work).

Thanks!

I don't think I would keep the heat lights on for them. If the power goes out and they aren't acclimated to the cold, they could die. Without the heat, their under fluff will keep them plenty warm.
