Lynda - that pic is the cutest! Go ahead, tell him we all said so - then take another pic of his face!

Bloomin - Gretchen is good for now. Had a pile of tests after her TIA in October, and is seeing a specialist in December. We had dinner in Ohio at the Nationals - you should see her chic pics on FB - awesome!

christi - Remember that drafts are the most dangerous part of the cold, and after that, lack of ventilation. I wrap my whole coop in a giant sheet of plastic, but I have a good-sized area along the roof that is vented, and a crack around the people door, opposite where the girls sleep, for ventilation. Even in the freezing cold, you can feel how much heat they generate when you first open the door in the morning! I make sure to keep plenty of litter on the floor, and I allow them to sleep in the nest boxes in the winter, if they want. I wouldn't put lights in there, either. They can handle a lot of cold, as long as there's no drafts blowing their "air pocket" open.

My birds have not had heat lamps yet at all. Excet my 3 gamebirds-they are solittle and dont have down-so I have to keep a light on them:-( I will not put heating lights down there but I will use those lights to keep the waterers defrosted enough to stay liquified. If you chicks are little heating lights are perfect-if they are full grown they needs to become acclimated to temps slowly so they become accustomed to cold weather. my weather up North is brutal...The only time I would heat the place is when I expect temps to dip below freezing-and it has already gotten to be below single digits. Its better for them to adjust to the cold nightly than be snuggly warm and have power go out and temps drop 40 degrees on them...Id say no lights for now until it gets brutal...if they are full grown feathered.

Morning All!

Nat, I have a 250 watt on the babies in the coop, they are a month old. Will I need to keep them heated all winter? Pretty much feathered out right now. It's 42 degrees right now but a big drop expected for the weekend.

Picking up the turkey today and then tomorrow I can bake all day! Have fun guys!

at only a month old I would keep the heating light on-for another month or so. during the sunny days I would say no as the housing you have them in get alot of warm sunlight-but at night I would keep it on for them:) I have a 150 watt bulb on for my 8 week olds in garage and its been in sinlge digits at night -they are good:)
