Hi all !
We have not gotten our chickens yet. We thought here would be a good place to get educated first.
We are from western NY. Looking to start small (4). We do have a coop and large enclosed run. Hoping to get chicken in MArch/ April.
I have researched breeds for layers. Narrowed it down to two.
Who has there favorite cold tolerant, good layers?

Wyandottes and the other Orpington. Thoughts?

Out of the two I've only owned Wyandottes, but both are good breeds. Orpingtons will come highly recommended by the majority of people (though the buff variety is a little overrated IMO).

Welcome to BYC! Getting your first chicks is soo exciting, yet so scary at times. If you want to learn more, definitely visit the articles section of our forum, there's a wealth of information there, especially on raising chicks! The breeds you have selected are definitely a good choice, if you want, you can even make a new thread asking people here for more suggestions, I'm sure they'll come up with other great options for you!
