Shaws call duck incubation thread (hatch a wonderful(worthless to Ralphie) dux thread)

Just for you guys:

You don't press down when doing this, you gently pull the vent open. Pressing down will hurt them. I'll maybe write up a whole article and take a picture of how I like to hold them when I do this, etc.

It also takes much less time than this video, I was just making sure you guys could see what I was looking at. Usually takes five or ten seconds tops per duckling.

That video appears too graphic and horrific for my tender sensibilities.

So question. . is there a certain window of time you need to vent sex if your going to do it? Like would it hurt to vent sex a 4 or 5 week old bird? Of course I can imagine it would get harder to do the bigger They get.

:ya awesome

It played for me. Thanks! I tried sexing my Swedish a few years ago. It's best to do in the first week, right? I think I had read that large ducks do best around 2-6 days old?

Yep, first week is best, the vent is more elastic at that age so the sexing is easier :)

It's easiest to do it in the first few days, usually within the first week is best. That said, you can do older birds, it's just not as easy for you or the bird. I had to sex a two and a half month old gosling before. So it can be done, but it's easier when they're smaller and their vent is more elastic.

I would really like to know if my blue Bibb is a girl or boy. They are getting to be about five weeks and haven't heard a quack from any of them yet. I'm starting to worry they are all males lol. I don't really wanna make them hate me any more than they already do. . so I'll just wait it out :barnie I've already got one I'm having to handle daily to treat it's poor eye. Sofie duck mom does not like it one bit and ferociously attacks me every time I pick it up :lau
I don't guess I posted about it here so for those who don't know my gray duckling got it's eye poked on something or got pecked by another bird. I think it was a piece of hardware cloth that I didn't get secured good enough on my separation panels :hitI feel terrible about it.

talked to my vet yesterday and he told me to put castor oil on it several times a day and it should shrink back down. If it doesn't I will have to have it drained or removed.

Zombie Eye!!!

You know what you need to do....

Is it blind in that eye? It makes sneaking up on them easier. I have a couple roosters that are blind in one eye. I assume from fighting, they spend most their day going in circles to see what is beside them.

I worry about those sharp edges all the time. I'm betting most of us have a few here and there though. You have a great house for them, sometimes they just find a way to get hurt no matter what.
