Shaws call duck incubation thread (hatch a wonderful(worthless to Ralphie) dux thread)

Pics
Every time you open or touch an egg you risk infection to the egg, you risk an accident. Dropping something on the egg and/or dropping the egg.

While the risk may very well be acceptable with DUX eggs, what if you had a valuable egg in the incubator.

I would even use a rack with a string on both sides to turn eggs instead of reaching in before I got the egg turners.

The investment in an egg turner is worthwhile top protect the eggs of worthwhile species....so I understand not using one with Dux...

Your so silly about DUX we all know you don't mean a word of it.:)

Okay my bators are Muscovy ducks and believe me handling those dirty eggs they sit on and hatch tells me handling them isn't going to hurt them. But I will fess up and say I did drop a cochin bantam egg once when candling :( I hated losing that lil one. Now I pick up and put into a basket lined with a towel and take into my dark feed room to candle. Probably couldn't break a Muscovy egg if dropped on cement just about have to have a hammer to crack one open. Not the same with my Runners and Buffs though.

What kind of rack and what kind of string? That sounds like a wonderful idea r. Can you elaborate on that or show me a pic of some kind? I'm hoping to get a different incubator with a Turner that would allow the eggs to be on their side before I do this again. But if I don't. . that sounds a lot easier. And less problematic. Eggs like to roll around and try to crash into the side of the incubator every time I turn them. I got some shelf liner to put under them but haven't got around to putting it in there yet.
I will say dux eggs are tough. They are a lot harder to crack than chicken eggs.

Just lay a cookie rack on the bottom of the incubator, poke a small hole through the wall on opposite sides of the incubator, lay the eggs in the rails of the rack, when you pull the string one way (slowly) the eggs will roll. pull. the other way they roll back.

I have no pictures as I moved up into a real incubator years ago.......

Depending on the size of the rod making the cooling rack you may have to remove every other rod.

Thats a really cool idea.:thumbsup I would so do this if it wasn't a borrowed incubator
I doubt she wants me poking holes in it:( I did wonder about putting them on a cookie rack or something so they wouldn't roll around crazy. . but I worried the rack might get too hot being metal.

So tomorrow is lockdown and ive got one duckling that looks too small, still alive but hasnt filled the egg like the others
