As far as eating goes, I would rather eat a carp than a crappie.
I've always heard neither one was really fit for human consumption

Carp baked in canned tomatoes is good.I've always heard neither one was really fit for human consumption![]()
Nothing about canned tomatoes sounds good. And tomatoes and fish together? Sounds even worse. Might be one of those things Iād have to try in order to change my mind.Carp baked in canned tomatoes is good.

ETA: what does the acidity of the tomatoes do to the flavor of the fish?
Excellent informational answer! You get an A+. My inquiring mind has always wondered. Thank you.Ralphie, I have a few questions:
I know the answers, and if I donāt I will make them up.
How in the world do you drive when all you can see is white? I saw no other color in the environment other than white.
It might appear all white on video, however there are subtle changes and ridges that reflect life differently. We sometimes are several miles out in the lake. Lake of the woods is 80 miles north to south. The best fishing is on the north side, we have no other way to get there, than across the ice.
How do you keep your bearings when thereās no reference points to be seen?
That varies lake by lake, most lakes you can see shore landmarks. We use to drive a bearing for so many minutes. Ice driving speeds are slow. Normally less than 20 mph. High speeds can set off a wave under the ice. This is not good.
Hdo you keep your bearings when thereās no reference points to be seen?
We have GPS up here..
Once you dig your hole, do you mark it in any way so the next fisherman does not accidentally step in it OR drill too close to it causing a weakened area in/on the ice to a person and/or vehicle?
You would have a hard time drilling enough holes to weaken the ice. The holes freeze solid enough to drive on over night. We just drive over them during the day. The largest fishing hole is 10 inches. Most are 8 or less. I use a 7 inch auger.
However, we do saw or chop spear holes, they are square holes about 2 ft x 4ft. Those we place a tree branch or marker in them. When you see a branch growing out of the ice you avoid it.
They will freeze over enough to drive on in a little over a day.

What is the draw for fishing when you have to lug something other than your rod and reel, bait/lures, and possibly a bucket for your catch? An auger, for real?
the same draw that any fishing is. Itās cheaper to ice fish than summer fish. My auger is fairly light, I use a DeWalt 20v max drill to power it. I have a sled I pull behind me. If I had a smaller truck I would be driving on the ice now. I am a tad more cautious, so I pull the sled behind my ATV now. Without an auger you need to fish in someone elseās hole. I have less stuff with me for ice fishing than summer fishing.
I have a small portable fish house. I can carry it like a backpack or put it on the sled. I also bring a portable heater that runs on propane either the small canisters or a larger tank. A one pound tank canisters lasts about 4 hours.
Donāt ice fisherman also set up a little hut to block the elements?
I have an insulated fish house I use, it weighs 48 pounds, they are lighter without the insulation. I am thinking of getting a larger one, that weighs 68 pounds. I carry way more than I need, but thatās because I fish with the WW too often. I am making up a smaller second sled for when I go, she
ārequires ā way too much ch.. stuff
I have this model fish house

Iām still in awe at not being able to see anything other than white, a wall of white! Yes, I lived in Massachusetts and Alaska, but as a kid, and I didnāt pay attention to all the daily āobstacles.ā Snow was fun as a kid, but it is WORK as an adult.
To me, cold is a hindrance. I am not a fan of any weather where I canāt just slip on a pair of flip flops and go outside. Itās just a hassle to have to bundle up with five layers of ācanāt move!ā
we sit in shirt sleeves inside the fish houses, the RV type people are in shorts and slippers or barefoot. Itās not roughing it.
Good looking fish and do I spy a hackle/saddle feather hanging out of its mouth? You guys need to stop with fish pictures. The last fish I caught was over a month ago. It isnāt cold enough to ice fish here. I also donāt think the neighbors on the ice would appreciate me bouncing flies into their little holes.
The fish wasnāt very big either.

Yeah that fly is mostly longer saddle feathers with a little buck tail. Kinda resembles a sand eel.Good looking fish and do I spy a hackle/saddle feather hanging out of its mouth?![]()
