I really have no idea why this chick gorged herself on the sawdust. I know others said to use shavings... Seriously these were small shavings rather then true sawdust. But she didn't make it. The other chicks seem fine, but I wanted to be safe and have raised the feeder up off the floor. I have two dog leashes to hang it 2 inches off the floor. The chicks are able to reach their food, but not mix it so thoroughly with the sawdust/shavings. I raised their water too because they were making such a mess.

My BIL has 35 chicks, same age, on the same bedding and has had no problems. He refuses to pick their feeder up off the ground. So do you think the chick was just a crazy nut who liked the taste of wood?

Aww, I am so sorry.

I would advise to move the feeder though. Feeders are supposed to be a back height of the smallest bird so that they don't have to bend down to get food. Same goes for waters. I have also found that this way, there is a lot less bedding in the food and water and less on the floor/ground.

I'd put some antibiotics in the water just to be sure... it wasn't something else. And with the shavings my chicks go bonkers over them still after a week so I still have Paper towels down...
