I just lost a really nice Serama cockerel that I had really high hopes for to show. Was fine, and then he wasn't. Had no symptoms at all until the morning of the day he died, and even then, he was just moving a little slower than everyone else. Was dead by the afternoon. I felt terrible because I'd just gotten home from work that morning and I drive 81 miles each way, so was very tired. I wish I'd have brought him inside and given him some vitamins. I just didn't realize he was that ill.
Don't beat yourself up about it. I am willing to bet that it would have happened even if you'd have been home. Sometimes things just happen and we don't know why, unfortunately. I'm so sorry. It soulds like you really did everything right, and your neighbor sounds kind and caring and I am sure didn't want to burden you and ruin your trip.
