Poor Doris is still not laying. I know for sure because I only have three hens and I know who's egg is who's.
A new problem developed yesterday which I cannot understand from everything I've been reading.
Out of nowhere, Doris has developed brooding behavior. She sits in the nest for hours on end even though there are no eggs and she has never laid! What's up?
The other two chickens apparently did not like this and started chasing and pecking her so I let them out of the coop. They were Ok for awhile but towards dusk they started ganging up on her again.
When they went in the coop Doris did not join her sisters on the roost. Instead she slept in the nesting box.
I cannot figure out how a hen can be broody if she has never laid. How can this be? From what I have been reading, broody behavior has to do with hormones and if she isn't producing how does this work?
I feel bad for her but don't know what to do.
Any advice anyone?
HA
