She recognized me!

I spend around an hour with my flock of khaki campbells every day and they are SO skittish. I got them when the were a week old. It makes sense though a lot of people say they are skittish and on the metzer farms duck breed comparison table 1 through 9 1 being the most calm and 9 being the most nervous khaki campbells rank a 9

my khaki campbell girl is REALLY friendly, but my khaki boy is a little shy around new people

My Pekins are very attached to me. My female especially. Even after being outside a couple weeks. She will quack at me as I walk across the yard in the morning to come give them fresh water and food. And will quack at me as I walk across the yard to put them in their coop at night.

When I go into their pen they run up to me and Nibble at my feet til I reach down and pet them

I have two 5 week old Rouens as well. They are more skittish, but will follow me around. And if I have them outside and get too far away they panic and come running across the yard til they are within a few feet of me

But I spend time with them all each day and give them treats and feed them out of my hand so they are used to me. I think they see me as a giant duck

So I’ve never been great with maintaining close relationships with my flock once they move outside. The barn is a bit of a walk from my house so I don’t make that many trips a day since the path is one whole hill. Even so, my chocolate runner, Waddles, and I were close when she was a baby. She’d sit up on my shoulder and just chill with me for hours. Well, once she moved outside, she mixed with the flock and basically forgot about me. I don’t usually try to catch my ducks as it tends to stress them out more than the chickens. Well, today, I was given an opportunity and I snatched her real quick. At first, she wiggled. But then I pet her chest (which is what I did when she was a baby) and said her name. She stopped and stared at me like “ah, it’s you” before slapping me in the face and flying off.
Strong build, twist ending. Didn’t see that slap coming. Everybody’s a critic, I suppose.

I feel most loved at feeding time because my entire flock follows me until I throw out the feed lol.

I let my ducks out in the AM, then go back into the house to chop up some lettuce and grapes and tomatoes to give them because they’re good ducks. More often than not, they will wander back into the house looking for me and demanding their treats, like the song goes, “a quack quack here, a quack quack there... here a quack, there a Quack...”

I have 5 khaki girls, and they seem more like drama queens than skittish. I love them, but my welshies are much calmer.

Waddles still loves you! Maybe she just doesn't want to be embarrassed around her big-girl bird friends, cuddling up to a human?

Honestly, all but one of my current runners were hand-raised by me, and NONE wants to be held. Until recently, all but one (and she WAS hand-raised by me) would gladly eat out of my hand. Sloane would approach but wanted me to drop the food before she would eat. One day, the light went on in her head, and as soon as I fed the runners their food, she ran back to where I keep the chicken feed. As I scooped it out, she started quacking and practically jumping up and down until I bent down and let her eat OUT OF MY HAND. Now, it's our daily routine -- but she still isn't going to stand for any snuggling!
