If they hatch in the turner they have a chance of getting stuck in it and hurting themselves.

You mean the egg turner? You're using the LG, right? You need to take the turner out, but I don't know if you adjust temp to compensate for that. I'm sure AmyLynn will have that answer
The guy I bought the bator from also gave me a homemade hatching box that he used for lockdown, I really didn't want to try using that for my 1st hatch but I'm rethinking that now, lol. If it keeps me from having to turn that knob again I'll do it!!Yeah, the turner, I would think if I take it out that the bottom would be around 94 degrees or so, maybe lower.
Oh I forgot about those! Yeah! When should you be getting the silkie eggs?
I have a ?: do you have to take the rails out for lockdown? I'm nowhere near that yet, my batch just started its 2nd day 3 hours ago but I was just wondering. I really don't want to have to adjust the temp again, lol, it was such a pain to get right the 1st time. If I take the rails out wouldn't I have to adjust the temp again so it's the right temp where the eggs are? Since mine is still air and there seems to be a big difference in temp from top to bottom? I'd prefer to leave that adjustment knob where it is and never ever touch it again. I'm scared of that dang knob, lol.
K, as long as I don't have to adjust the temp again I'll be ok.No need to change the temp, and that would be scary anyhow. However, you can check by monitoring temperatures 3/4" above the incubator floor.
And yes, you remove the turner.

I found a cool website for anyone wanting to research historic coop designs.

Because, if I move, I want to have my new coops planned before I start...
I will check it out! I saw this website a little while ago and thought of you. It's for a hatching service. Just to give you more ideas...http://www.debsbirds.com/services.htm
Yeah, I think I'll do that, I'll play around with it a little and see how it works and how long it takes to get up to temp. It is forced air so that's a big plus, honestly when I first set up the LG and saw how much of a bear the temp was to get right I almost said screw it and thought about using the hatching box for the whole 21 days. The only thing that stopped me was I would have had to hand turn the eggs and I didn't like the idea of opening it that many times a day and letting all the heat out.You have time to try and set it up and stabilize it before lockdown. I would play with it and see how it works. Someone on here, I think, mentioned using clean small water bottles to mimic the eggs and stabilize their hatcher.
