Yeah, I'm going to snip a length of chicken wire off and straighten it out and use that, it should be rigid enough to hold it.

I was thinking along those same lines. What about a metal shirt hanger? Clip a piece about 8 inches long and bend it into an "L". Tape the probe to the wire, then just let the hanger hold it in place

Not sure what, if any, effect the metal hanger would have on your readings. But seeing how bulky your wire is, compared to fishing line, the split shot may not work, anyway.

Yea, I don't think it will work, I didn't think about it til I got the split shot, I kept thinking it was bigger for some reason (there's another 1 for you SC ) so I think I'll try the wire thing.
