She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Finally got a call from my Dad, he's recovering and the surgery went well! (My dad is a super high risk for surgery and recently finished a super long course of chemo for two kinds of lymphoma)
Doctor reassured him he got all the colon cancer and he should get out of the hospital on Sunday if it all goes well.

When you have different breeds how do you go about mating. I find have to worry about that yet. At the moment I have my 2 boys in a bachelor tractor and the others are still young. Do you all have a pen for separate breeds? Do you do individual matings? If so how long do you keep a pair together? For example with my asian blues I have one girl and 2 boys. One boy is very aggressive and he will be dinner as soon as Jay gets a day off. So I would put the girl and boy together for how long. When is the first egg fertile?

A few folks will do individual matings. Some have pens with 1-2 roosters and a group of females. Most have a flock and one rooster so they know what they are getting. SC has like 7 pens. I have two ATM. WV just keeps a separate house, coop, yard, pond ,etc for each flock.

yes, my breeds have their own pens. I haven't graduated to individual matings yet

I'm planning on having a sub-pen by next year and will keep my breeding trio of Orloffs in it for a month, then gather all the eggs and set them. Anything from that pen will be pure Orloff, anything from the outside will be EE, OE, or Wheaten Ameraucana. (Well at least that's my plan) After that, they can all run around together and the pen will be for the grow-outs.

I bet that's a relief. Wonderful news.

Thanks. All year my father has been battling through chemo and has been looking forward to coming down to visit for the Balloon Fiesta. (My mom, of course, has been worried sick about how the interruption in routine affected her dog.

) On a follow-up PET scan, he had a hot spot of colon cancer, so had to go in for surgery a few days ago.

He's still convinced they'll be down here in 3 weeks, I told him to wait and let the doctor decide that in a few weeks.

I will have to build some more. I currently have 4. One has the tinies in it with the brooder heating pad. I could probably use this one to breed in. It will accommodate 4 birds, but will need to be modified as it would be difficult to collect eggs. The next coop and run is the original and houses the girls. The massive pen was built to accommodate turkey and 50 meaties. But I would only do 25 at a time. We are using it as the grow out pen and turkey house. The fourth is a tractor bachelor pad, which could also be used as a breeding place. I have another pen that could be used in a pinch. It would need some modification. I use it only twice a year when Liesel is in season. I think I might have enough. But it would be nice to have a couple of extras, just in case.
