She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

When you have different breeds how do you go about mating. I find have to worry about that yet. At the moment I have my 2 boys in a bachelor tractor and the others are still young. Do you all have a pen for separate breeds? Do you do individual matings? If so how long do you keep a pair together? For example with my asian blues I have one girl and 2 boys. One boy is very aggressive and he will be dinner as soon as Jay gets a day off. So I would put the girl and boy together for how long. When is the first egg fertile?
I forgot to add. After a male breeds a female she can retain the sperm for 2-4 weeks and fertilize all the eggs laid over that period of time. If you want to keep a pure mix you need to collect eggs 3-4 weeks after you put them together. Most say the female is clear after 3 weeks, but to wait 4 weeks to be sure, especially if you are selling eggs. Most folks just keep the breeding pair or group together for the whole time you are collecting hatching eggs to ensure the highest fertility.

I have a Marans over EE's, GCM, and RSLs, but I know what the rooster is and I know who's eggs are who's. That gives me sexlinked Marans, possible EE's and dark egg laying chicks.

That's a good plan. I am keeping my boys separated until late winter early spring. I want the girls unmolested until absolutely necessary. I also need to be sure of the quality of the adult birds and I am still studying on that. The girls that are not up to pat will not be bred, but for eating eggs. The subpar boys will have to be dinner, which is the reason most of mine are dual purpose.

Another factor in the assist or not, btw... Amy is working on personal projects within a backyard flock, and SC is breeding to SOP for selling... those factors are major ones in deciding assist or not...
I don't assist now that I sell n breed. I can't read that much on cell today and to catch up with 150 posts isn't happening lol. Seems like u all chitchat mostly so to skim don't work.
Yep, good point...

AmyPaperlady I can't believe she is so low on this list. She rarely posts, but I guarantee she has read every bit of this thread She only speaks when spoken to, unless she is on Oz's thread, where she will tell her life story. I knew I liked her when she dropped the first Alice reference in the early days of the thread OK, that's it. If I missed anyone, it means you aren't posting enough :smack 116
:gig good assesments... think I'm a bit overrated though, but thanks... and making people feel like idiots is counterproductive to a learning forum... oh, and I have little patience for people who feel the need to be right all the time... :/
Anyone have any eggs to set this weekend? Not sure if I want to start this weekend or next.... I need to be hatching .... just because I love them eggs..... our project birds eggs are getting out of pullet stage and calling my name LOUD!
I just set more eggs last night... :lau Cream Legbar/Barred Rock?
Is that a cuckoo legbar? Very interesting look. I could be totally wrong, but that's what it looks like to me. If so, what color are the eggs?
I think Cuckoo has a black wash over front of legs...
I thought barred rock?
My first thought, but a Legbar body... and crest, lol...

Cheesesteak from hubs... that's not a window but a pair of barn doors!!
You stick around this thread long enough and I will tell you what a window is
Nah, show not tell... ;)
Well, I could make a reply to your cheesecake post and suck you into the sludge... Ravyn rather enjoyed it
Cheesesteak, not cheesecake!! :smack
Thanks! I should take up speed reading! And find a better internet provider! Dropped signal at least a few dozen times today. In other news... collected eggs this morning and it was the 3rd day in a row getting eggs from all 3 duck hens! Anyway I cant find the air cell in one of them :(
400
Could it be because it was a bit chilly (down to 49*) last night / this morning here in the Great White North?
Sometimes very fresh, just laid eggs don't show an air cell for a day... make your best guess at which end is bigger/rounder and keep that end up... recheck tonight...
Barred rock...right? And since I ws taking pics....lol Elvis made a full recovery and is as healthy as ever. His girl Priscilla. My girl Raven, the trouble maker. My Polish/silkies two kids and my silkie/nn My black Japanese Bantams Chibi and Sukoshi-both ended up being girls My silkie/nn that we are still trying to figure sex before naming. Ok, just a few since I was snapping pics.
Looks like Barred Rock to me... very glad Elvis recovered, he looks great! Btw, a great body is not all it's cracked up to be... I'll take the good personality and attitude over a great bod any day... :plbb
Finally got a call from my Dad, he's recovering and the surgery went well! (My dad is a super high risk for surgery and recently finished a super long course of chemo for two kinds of lymphoma) Doctor reassured him he got all the colon cancer and he should get out of the hospital on Sunday if it all goes well. :weee
Glad to hear your dad went through surgery well!! Hoping for speedy recovery!! :hugs

Separate pens... or separate a specific hen to collect just her eggs... if they aren't separated and you have multiple roos of different breeds then you can't guarantee pure... eggs are fertile 24hrs after a mating, since egg has to be fertilized before it travels down the tract for laying... and eggs stay fertile from a single mating up to 3 weeks(+/-)...

That's awesome! Congrats!

A few folks will do individual matings. Some have pens with 1-2 roosters and a group of females. Most have a flock and one rooster so they know what they are getting. SC has like 7 pens. I have two ATM. WV just keeps a separate house, coop, yard, pond ,etc for each flock. :gig

And what was I thinking, hatching 4 more different breeds this time! :th
