She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

My first ever broody hatch was on Thanksgiving.
I love that through sheer willpower you aren't going to have broodies

. Don't the chickens know that you never question the queen?
Apparently the second group does not know that!! The first group got the message, why not these guys? I am concerned with the egg size though...lol Does that sound familiar?? No seriously I am. Some of these eggs aren't any bigger than the smalls at the store. Some are mediums. I guess we'll find out. Serious question. I know little about broodiness and unlike me haven't done a ton of research since the first went broody. Does a broody hen entice the others to become hormonal as well and go broody?

I have 2 pips!!!!! And 1 is working hard at pipping I think.
Congrats!!! Now wait to do any candling until you have no more hatchers and pippers.

Without published, controlled studies, it would be very hard for us to isolate variables to test. Don't discount the value of a properly performed study.

If I put 20 eggs in an incubator in February and add water every day and get a 90% hatch, and put 20 eggs in an incubator in April and get a 90% hatch, and put 20 eggs in an incubator in August and get a 20% hatch, what does it tell me? Nothing...too many variables. Studies provide controlled observation of a single variable. While the results cannot be directly applied to uncontrolled environments, they can help us improve performance by monitoring or controlling variables. That is why even at home, data logging is essential if we want to improve performance.

I've often wondered if light can influence the position of a chick in the shell, just as it does a seed, even underground. With my hard to hatch eggs, I've thought about placing a moderately bright light above the incubator and setting eggs in cartons to see if the hatch rate is better than eggs on their side in no to dim light. Has anyone found a study on this?

I am NOT discounting it. As I said, it is very interesting and thought provoking, BUT I would not base my methods and recommendations based on studies over experience. If I find method A is working fine for me with outstanding results, I am not going to abort my practices because a study has shown doing "this" produces "this" result, when I am already getting "this" result with what I am doing. I am saying I do not put studies over experience.

I didn't notice the pips til after I started candling the others, the speckles kind of camouflaged the pips, but I think all the others are DIS. They were cold to the touch and I didn't see any movement and the drawdown hadn't progressed any. So I think 3 will be it.
