She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Nadya's Poultry http://www.nadyaspoultry.com/ sells shrink bags, zip ties, and evacuation tubes.

You just tuck the bird in the bag neck first (I tuck the wings behind the back to prevent tears), insert the hollow tube into the cavity, zip tie snugly around the tube, and plunge into hot water (just like scalding). The instructions say submerge but I've found it more effective to dip to just behind the end of the drumstick, pull from the water, pull the tube, snug up the zip tie, and dip the other end to shrink the excess wrap. They look much more professional, no freezer burn, and very durable. I also have a vacuum sealer but I've found the shrink bags to be much nicer to deal with.

I also use inexpensive poly bags (freezer thickness) that I sell fresh birds in so that the buyer can easily repack as cut up before freezing if desired.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks

I set 21, had one blood ring before day 7. Last I knew they were all progressing just great. I will say, I will be surprised if the polish crosses hatch alright. Simply because I think the eggs were still a bit small for incubating There were 3 of them. The silkies were a bot bigger but they were a bit smaller than I would have liked too and I think there was 4 of those, but they weren't looking as cramped as the Polish. I will say my last two hatchers I only had three in each that failed to hatch, so 17 is very plausible...lol  That would give me 81% from set and 85% from lockdown, I'd really like to get my first 100% from lockdown though...lol

I have a question about this. So if the egg was to small then you're saying the chick wouldn't have enough room to hatch?? I guess I always just assumed if the egg was small then that would just mean a smaller chick, is that incorrect? That's interesting. I have a couple eggs in there now that are very small too...Hmmmmm...

LOL! If its not a girl then yes! lol! I always call them "hes" when they could be "she's"!

I always call them "he's" too!! Better start calling them "she's" since that's much better for chicken owners!

Amy, I promise I've never ate any of my babies.. even the ones that probably deserved it. I bought 20 Silkie chicks a couple years ago and got 18 roos ..I took months finding them homes where they would be yard ornaments and not get eaten. But my girls still look like they'd cook real nice on the grill..

I wanted to buy 30-40 cornish x to grow and process but there's no way I can process.. my lovely guy said he'd do the killing, but that still leaves everything else between that point and freezer ready that I'm not willing to do so until I have a girl (or guy) nearby willing, I'm sol
LOL. I gave away my first 5 roos to an old man that probably keeps more animals than he can afford, I don't know. The rest I've been able to see in groups with the extra girls I decided not to keep. I'm on a don't tell philosophy. I know that a majority of unwanted/excess roos will be dinner for someone, I just don't want to know...lol

Wow! You are waaaaaayyyyyy behind

Welcome to the thread. I sell eggs, chicks, and started pullets, and all sales combined will almost allow me to break even. I don't make any profit at all, but I have paid for all supplies since January with money from sales

He really doesn't mean to come off as rude, it's just his personality. Give him a couple of these:

I gave my first ten silkie roos to a Mexican friend of mine. I'm certain that they are frolicking in the field as we speak...

Good point. I should have also said that this is the first time in 7 years that my flock was large enough, and I incubted enough, to have a lot of inventory to sell. All of my hatching eggs come from my own flocks

Technically I should be hatching my own this year but had to do an emergency rehoming mid summer last year. .after spending a small fortune on eggs and chicks..so basically had to start completely from scratch this year :( I did have a couple amazing breeders that I dealt with last year that sent me eggs for just shipping costs, but I just made up for that by buying more eggs from harder to find breeds..but I do hatch enough of my own to sell locally to pay for feed and bedding..all of my coops/brooders and materials are free leftovers or refurbished. .even sold some compost this year ..I'll just be happy to be able to supply the 4H kids with quality birds next year since that was my goal in this adventure to start. .

I don't know. LOL I wondered wether it would produce smaller birds but I'm thinking a bird's size is determined by genetics and nutrition. So if the bird is "programmed" to be larger and has the nutients, that breed would make it bigger and either cause development problems from not having room to grow, or hatching problems from being too big for the shell. I guess I'll find out in a couple more days.

Thanks for posting these! I am marking my 14 day air cells today. They look like they've gotten a lot bigger since day 7. I know the standard photo online of 7,14,18. But I wanna see some real life photos to compare. I'm not adding water to my incubator because humidity is staying around 40% dry. My babies are getting so big in their shells! Not so much to see anymore. I still love looking in my one see through shell! Did you ever notice, while candling, that there seems to be one main vein that's bigger then the others & moves a lot? Is that like the chicken umbilical cord?
