She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

It is FOUR AM.... (OK, 4:18 am now) and I just have to report- I have my first pip!!!! One of my silkie's eggs have pipped!
fl.gif
no complications!!!

You will never, ever catch me up at 4 AM checking eggs. My last hatch of 22, I never actually saw one hatch.
I've never had a day 19 pip. I've had pip to hatch on day 20, but never anything on day 19.
So, chances are we may get our first Queenie chick late today? I want a pic of how wet that chick is when you pull it out, seriously. By the time I pull mine out, fluff is blowing through the air vent.
Isn't your target lockdown humidity 75%? Do you have to do anything special to keep it that high? How are your temps holding? I think you need to be very specific with what you are doing so that other styro users can see what works for you. I'm going to dial my insanity back a notch for the next few days since so many people are hatching

If you do, this thread is gonna look like that other thread....

Don't worry, that is painful to read

Heck, I was on my own nerves by the end of yesterday

I was busy cleaning and in my garden and taking the dogs out.
That will be my weekend. The garden is gorgeous this year, my best ever. Hopefully I will be picking tomatoes by next weekend.
The chicken project this weekend will be making gravity fed feeders for the pens. I have all my waterers gravity fed so that I can fill from the outside, but I still have to carry the feeders back and forth. I have a lot of 6" PVC, so I'm going to hang feeders that I can also fill from outside the pen

You're locking down again? I don't know if you have posted this or not before, so I'm going to ask. Are you staggering hatches in 1 or two large incubators, then moving them to a hatcher for lockdown? What do you do with all the chicks? Do you sell that many?

Woohoo!! A bit early ain't it? Get 'em in, get 'em out! Good luck

That's awesome! My gardens not in the best of shape, mostly over run with wild blackberries, so this year I put cardboard down and covered that with leaves and pine straw and that's helped ALOT I just wish I had more cardboard boxes.

Two years ago I started building raised beds and bought a bagger for the lawnmower. I use the grass clippings for mulch, which greatly cuts down on the weeds, and makes the dirt even better for the following year

I don't have any raised beds. I do to but we don't have a bagger (except on the push mower) so I have to take up the grass clipping. Yes it does!

We have about 3 acres grassed, so you won't catch me raking clippings. I put the excess into a compost pile behind the garden to cure it for a year or so with the leaves and coop cleanouts. I learned the hard way the first year not to put fresh chicken poop on a garden

Ah. Nice. Burned your plants?

Massively. Ruined all the tomatoes. They would get about half size, then the bottoms would just rot out. I haven't put any fertilizer or miracle grow on it this year, and it is seriously the most thriving garden I have ever had. Already picking squash, cucumbers, zuchinni, and assorted peppers. Tomatoes should be soon, but the ones I am the most excited about won't produce for a while. Hearts of Gold cantaloupe. They are a smaller cantaloupe, but so sweet they will make your teeth hurt.

just thinking about them

Thank you for all the good wishes (well wishes).

So, yes it is early. Even for me. I don't technically hit day 19 until noon. My next to the last hatch I had half pipped mid 19 but none hatched until 20. Last hatch I had half pip and hatch day 19 with the rest (minus one) finishing up on day 20. I can't say surprised with these eggs being smaller though as the one that pipped is one of the silkies. (Though I expected if they were going to hatch it would be the polish first.)

Half the reason I was checking them is between the last 24-48 hours I've had problems with the bator being consistant on both sides. So I am struggling a bit with that. If I can keep both sides above 98 and under 100.5 I'm going to be happy. My humidity, well somewhere between 70 and 90...lol When I did the test before the hatch it showed I was off around 10%. But it's reading 70-75 and has a couple times read 80 and there is no condensation so..... I don't know. I figure as long as the gage reads 70 I'm good considering it was reading low to start off with. Last time I ran with three cloth sponges in the bottom with the wells and my two tiny bowls filled and two sponges on top. I forewent the cloth sponges in the bottom this time as we aren't using the pellet stove and the air isn't as dry. I 'm not having a problem getting the humidity up, but it hasn't been lasting as long so I opted to wet two cloth sponges and fold them up and slip them in there this morning. I wish I had gone ahead and put them under the screen last night, but I can't do anything about that.

I'm pretty nervous. I wasn't nervous hardly at all last hatch. This hatch- pins and needles. Not liking the feeling. But I do expect the first hatcher if he's going to hatch, out tonight at some point.
I still have to run to the store and buy the chick starter and scrub my water bottle and find my rocks..... He's a bit earlier than I expected...lol
