She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

That is awesome!!!! Congrats! How are the rest doing?

Thanks Amy! Yeah they are all good thanks, 17 days old now and are looking VERYscruffy I have to say!! Feathers coming in well but at that funny stage now. Still got the 21 as sales are really slow but I'm hoping once I know they will hi like hot cakes. Will get some updated pics of them.
Feel better for the getaway?

So, I have a question for you guys. Lots of you-most of you-use a screen name far from your original name, but you sign posts/pms with your real name or you have your real name listed on your profile info. So, would you guys rather be called by your real name or your screen name??? I've been curious for a while now, when someone signs posts/pms especially, with their "real" name if that's what they'd be prefered to be called. I know personally I prefer Amy to Amy Lynn, but don't really care, either way it is my name...lol

I do, thanks for asking. I've actually talked to my sister and told her I need her a couple times a year at least for her to come and stay with Dad so I can get a break. I don't ask the siblings for much, but it gets harder and harder the more his health declines and I get burnt out faster and faster so I think it's fair. She agrees so depending on financial and the condition of my vehicle I might get another get away in the fall.

Too right, I don't think your asking a lot there for a couple of times a year. There are 365 days in a year and it seems like you do pretty much all of them!!
Good on you, if you don't ask you don't get :thumbsup

So, kinda strange question but is it normal for the yolk/embryo to acquire some very interesting shapes and or seem to 'stick' to one side of the shell?

Also, noticing pink lines inside the shell, bacterial infection? (would not be surprised, loads of dirty kid hands touching these eggs every day...) The embryo seems to be alive but not as energetic as its sisters.

Finally, While my air cells are... ok for day 7, some are much bigger than others. There does not seem to be rhyme nor reason for the disparity as the eggs are shuffled around quite frequently (result of being kept in a preschool, EVERYONE wants to look).

Also @demidog I totally kept an egg in my bra today when I needed to find my flashlight. Kept on worrying about it falling out! I think I would want a purpose built bra, or at least not a cami.

I do...lol The last couple years I've done all of them, but that's been in part to not having the extra funds or something wrong with my vehicle, so I can't blame her....lol I have 3 siblings, one that really is unable to be here and she's one of the ones I visit while away...lol, the oldest who is the one that stays when I am gone and my brother who is so totally unreliable I wouldn't want him here in the house while I am gone anyway. But I am feeling better about future plans, so hopefully it'll work out great and I'll get a little downtime at least from the caretaker responsibilities.

Joining in if its ok! Northern here, born and raised. Moved to NC after graduating college to teach. Loved living there but never became a tea drinking, grits eating girl. Met my husband, also a northerner while in NC as he was serving in the military. Married and moved to Alaska a few years later. Loved Alaska and we should have tried to stay. Lived there three years before being moved to Virginia. Spent a few years in Virginia and then my husband retired. Moved back north and we bought our house which sits on about 2 acres. Finally got chickens (8) and just ordered another 8 plus a meal maker from Meyer. Would love to incubate some in the next year. First I need to learn to use the saw...not sure I can talk my husband into another coop....

You are turning the eggs during the day right? If you are hand turning they will appear to be growing on one side when you candle. (Whatever side is facing up before you picked them up.) Once you turn the eggs everything will shift and the embryo will surface back up to the side that is up until they are bigger. As long as they are being turned, they should not actually "stick" to one side. If the eggs are being touched throughout the day by children w/unwashed hands you have a greater chance of bacteria getting in the pores of the shell and causing the embryos to die. Personally, I would only be allowing handling by adults or at least washed hands. The more they are handled the higher the probablitity that something may happen.

Air cells will grow at different rates on different eggs for different reasons but one of the biggest is shell quality and porousity of the shell. A more porous egg will loose moisture faster causeing the air cell to grow more. Always control humidity according to the majority of the eggs and not the minority.
