Joining in if its ok! Northern here, born and raised. Moved to NC after graduating college to teach. Loved living there but never became a tea drinking, grits eating girl. Met my husband, also a northerner while in NC as he was serving in the military. Married and moved to Alaska a few years later. Loved Alaska and we should have tried to stay. Lived there three years before being moved to Virginia. Spent a few years in Virginia and then my husband retired. Moved back north and we bought our house which sits on about 2 acres. Finally got chickens (8) and just ordered another 8 plus a meal maker from Meyer. Would love to incubate some in the next year. First I need to learn to use the saw...not sure I can talk my husband into another coop....

. And thank you for revealing gender cause some of us stink at figuring it out for ourselves...lol I'm way up North NY so I understand the north...lol

Oh my it sure does take some keeping up with this thread!!
Just dropping by to say the little polish has done it!! She has hatched all 4 eggs off and is doing a great job with them. Had a couple of instances where she has trodden on them but that's to be expected as she can't see anyway. As this is my first broody hen it's a pleasure to watch things done naturally. How she keeps them in check and has shown them how to eat and drink. It really is a wonder to behold!!

That has got to be a first. I just can't picture a broody polish

They are so pretty! Thanks so much for the lovely pics!

I do...lol The last couple years I've done all of them, but that's been in part to not having the extra funds or something wrong with my vehicle, so I can't blame her....lol  I have 3 siblings, one that really is unable to be here and she's one of the ones I visit while away...lol, the oldest who is the one that stays when I am gone and my brother who is so totally unreliable I wouldn't want him here in the house while I am gone anyway.  But I am feeling better about future plans, so hopefully it'll work out great and I'll get a little downtime at least from the caretaker responsibilities.

I'm sure you know what a great job you are doing and I'm also sure its your pleasure to be there for your dad.... But please take care of Amy too! You are no good to him if you are burned out. We all need to breathe sometimes! Lol

I'm headed south to spend some time with my sisters. We all took turns taking care of both our parents while they were ailing. (similar brother issue as you though lol) I'm so excited to see them!! And to get some time away from every day life!

Update on my bra egg!

The egg has hatched with the cutest little chick inside! Was totally worth it! It wasn't doing much last night but this morning it got back into action. It started off slowly but in the last 30 minuets zipped right round and popped out! I took it out my bra once it was fully zipped to give it room to push itself out. It hatched on a towel in my lap. I've made a sling with a scarf and am keeping it on me to keep it warm. I'm going to put it back with the mother in a few days, as soon as it's up on it's feet and able to keep up with the others. This has been a truly weird and amazing experience! And i would totally do it again if i needed to! The chick needed 2 more days of incubation when the mother hen decided she'd had enough. I have saved a life and i was so worth it. Little effort from me with the best possible result! Love it!

SC and "the bro" hatch.

So, I have a question for you guys. Lots of you-most of you-use a screen name far from your original name, but you sign posts/pms with your real name or you have your real name listed on your profile info. So, would you guys rather be called by your real name or your screen name??? I've been curious for a while now, when someone signs posts/pms especially, with their "real" name if that's what they'd be prefered to be called. I know personally I prefer Amy to Amy Lynn, but don't really care, either way it is my name...lol
I'm good either way.

I don't regret it at all and it's given me so many opportunities with my son I wouldn't have had if I hadn't had the need to be here for him. It's just nice to get that little break once in a while. What is up with brothers?

Hope you have fun with your sisters and enjoy your time away!!
