Was the Cock the white colored chicken? It could be double barred maybe. Just digging into some genetics stuff.
Sex-linked dilution BSd Females that are hemizygous for BSd (having one BSd gene) have light blue and barred plumage as do the heterozygous males, however, homozygous males show a dosage effect and are essentially white. These homozygous males resemble dominant whites but differ in that they are epistatic to pheomelanin while dominant white is not.http://sellers.kippenjungle.nl/page3.html
The way I read that the rooster could have two copies of barring and look white. But then all of the pullets he sires should have one copy of barring.
Edited to add this:
Pattern gene Pg
Dominant. This is the pattern gene which, together with other genes is responsible for the patterns of plumage. The pattern gene doesn’t seem to express in the absence of Ml in combination with some of the E locus alleles. See text. The pattern gene with the Db and Co Columbian-like restrictors is believed to be responsible for autosomal barring.
Since one of the parents seem to have the columbian gene. So you could have the pattern gene Pg, Db and Co and that would lead to barring regardless of sex.
And one more:
Autosomal barring Ab Non-sex-linked barring. Sometimes called 'parallel pencilling'. This is not a real gene, rather autosomal barring is due to combinations of Pg, Co, Db with eb, ER, and ebc. See text.
Looks to me like Co with Pg and Db since one of the parents is is columbian pattern. Sorry, just rambling.
The ISA browns probably provided the Db (brown) gene that mixed up with his Pg and Co gene to unleash a barred chick. That's awesome. If I understand it correctly the Pg gene does not show up without theMl, so maybe the ISA carried that too?

It drives me nuts, and I don't understand it. I'm going to have to learn, because now I have 2 breeds that I really need to keep up with. I know what I think looks good, but Sidewing can attest, I don't know JackI really need to learn this. In high school gents was my favorite. But it's been so long that I need a refresher eap for genetics and traits.
Still doesn't have much of a neck, but still cute....lol
I did in highschool. Anything science related-except chemistry I excelled at. Bio especially and I could do Punnett squares and all that..now I'm just like:It drives me nuts, and I don't understand it. So, I have a question for you guys. Lots of you-most of you-use a screen name far from your original name, but you sign posts/pms with your real name or you have your real name listed on your profile info. So, would you guys rather be called by your real name or your screen name??? I've been curious for a while now, when someone signs posts/pms especially, with their "real" name if that's what they'd be prefered to be called. I know personally I prefer Amy to Amy Lynn, but don't really care, either way it is my name...lol
We scare you? What about you and Friday?![]()
Seems we have lost that spontaneous, tolerant tone that we once had on this thread. I am very sad to see it go. The random swirls of topic with everyone's life is amazingly refreshing.

Yea!!!! I woke up this morning to 5 babies and 2 zippers...as if right now I have 7 chicken out and one is still zipping. No more pippers at this time.

Update on my bra egg!
The egg has hatched with the cutest little chick inside! Was totally worth it! It wasn't doing much last night but this morning it got back into action. It started off slowly but in the last 30 minuets zipped right round and popped out! I took it out my bra once it was fully zipped to give it room to push itself out. It hatched on a towel in my lap. I've made a sling with a scarf and am keeping it on me to keep it warm. I'm going to put it back with the mother in a few days, as soon as it's up on it's feet and able to keep up with the others. This has been a truly weird and amazing experience! And i would totally do it again if i needed to! The chick needed 2 more days of incubation when the mother hen decided she'd had enough. I have saved a life and i was so worth it. Little effort from me with the best possible result! Love it!![]()
Oh my it sure does take some keeping up with this thread!!
Just dropping by to say the little polish has done it!! She has hatched all 4 eggs off and is doing a great job with them. Had a couple of instances where she has trodden on them but that's to be expected as she can't see anyway. As this is my first broody hen it's a pleasure to watch things done naturally. How she keeps them in check and has shown them how to eat and drink. It really is a wonder to behold!!
