She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Shhh...no one told HER that she wasn't supposed to go broody. It's awesome! My poor BBB turkey went broody and I tried to let her keep a few eggs but she accidentally smashed each and every one, one at a time, when standing up, then she would make a "aawwwww" sound and lay back down on them. She spent a couple of weeks with yolk pasted on her bare breast. Sweet bird but she just doesn't have what it takes to be a mama. I feel bad for her. My Golden Narragansett hen shared the corner with her but big mama hogged all the eggs. I think she could cover two dozen.
My broody BCM has been doing the same thing, and has yet to hatch a chick. That's why my expectations are so low for this hatch. I don't know if fertility is low, or she just hasn't learned how to brood yet. I do know that at least 2 made it to day 21, but she either killed them intentionally, or smashed them, so I wanted to incubate a batch as a test

Well we're finally home.

Had fun with the kids and at the Rockies game. Appreciate DH letting us take the 5 5-week old chicks with us in a dog crate because I couldn't find a chicken-sitter. (They spent the weekend in the garage, 3 year old grandson got a kick out of them.) Listening to them peep for 6 hours got a little old though.

Chicks are now out in the shed with the other chickens - well, separated by mesh for their safety. Glad to see the big ones survived our absence, too. But I am very glad to finally have no chicks in the house!

I need to go back and catch up somewhat.....So how'd that day 1 candling go SC?
Welcome home!

I would drive to SC to see that but I know It ain't gonna happen. So Amy as I've been buzzing through ran across one of your post about this being family friendly thread and what I'd would like to know is what kind of family that would be . for a week or more I've been getting side ads to hook up with women for lets just say trash talk. you know like those 900 numbers I know the BYC gets funds by advertising but was a little shocked to see these ads .on a family friendly thread. But we need not forget this is still the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and while I might not like what someone says I respect their right to say it as long as it is not vulgar .you can't stop people from being rude or insulting. a person who stoops to this hasn't learned to walk upright yet so we must forgive them. once fully evolved they might look back and see they were wrong about many things or maybe not at that time you cull and move on . I have rules simple rules no one is allowed to talk down to me. only one person as a signed contract to yell at me and no one cheats me out of money more than once. and there has only been a few of those. see you can talk about grown up stuff on here.

OK, so you are saying this "Family Friendly" site that caters to young uns are running ads for "phone escort" services??? And that makes sense how?? If they let me block rude people from my own thread I could at least stop them being rude here.

ok Amy used a beat up old LG to make SC look bad now it his turn to see if he can redeem his pride using his $300.00 Brinsea 20 but he can't touch the eggs after set and must hatch at least 20 out of 21 which is what Amy did . the rules are simple Amy can do what ever she wants to her eggs and SC can't do any thing at all to his eggs. However SC gets to pick on make fun of Amy and others and

anyone he feels like and in between all this is a lot of very good info and a bunch of great people from all over the world .who are all a little well a lot crazy about there chickens turkeys ducks and whatever else they raise. that's the short version the other is almost 8000 post long and will be before noon tomorrow.
I just want to note that the one that didn't make it was an early quitter at day 4 or so and was tossed the first week. The rest of the 20 made it to lockdown and hatched-perfectly healthy and are close to being moved to the coop. Six of those were candled EVERY SINGLE NIGHT to show that with proper handling and precautions, candling does not jeopardize a hatch. Good cliff notes BYC!!!

... well, there is no movement in the eggs, I checked three times today, all the eggs so I think Murphy hit ironically as possible.
I guess that falls into the "Be careful what you wish for" category.

Interesting heads on those
I shot the sheriff but I didn't shoot the deputy
Maybe she did an adult entry course. I did a few months of colledge when I was 30 but dropped out cause I was working 2 full time jobs as well
Sorry I grew up during the changeover here in au and work with aircraft so I convert approximate easy. Our normal summer top is 40c to 50c which is 112-120 f
That is true, it could have been a possibility. I actually did two years for the associates degree straight after high school graduation, but most of my classes were at our extension site and 95% of the students were non-traditional (adult) students that had gone back to school after years of making a life in the world. One of them was even in her 60's. My best friend (at the time) and I were pretty much the youngest there...lol Main campus was just the opposite with traditional students, but we actually fit in better with the non traditional. lol

Just let the hen out with her chicks for the first time. Went better than expected and managed to get them back in too!

That's awesome!

That bird is a freak of nature. It just doesn't even look right. A broody Polish...

Just shows there's always exceptions to everything.

It was amazing. I held each egg against my heart for 7 minutes so they would get to know me. I named each of them, then kissed the egg and brushed it against my cheek before lovingly setting it back in the incubator. My humidity was 43% instead of 42%, so I took a Q-tip and removed small amounts of water until I stabilized at 42%. The entire process to 6.5 hours, but was so worth it. The miracle of life is truly amazing

Nah, what really happened is I went in that room to get a shirt out of the closet, and the power was still on, so it's good

I did decide that there is another ratio that needs to be measured into the successful hatch equasion. It's called the HOSPH ratio, an ackronym for Hours Of Sleep Per Hatch. You have to keep track of the hours you sleep at night for 21 days, then divide by the number of eggs that hatch, so my last set would have looked something like this: 147hrs/22 hatched=6.68 HOSPH

Such a sweet story you had going there... then BLAM! You have to go and ruin it! Get back in there and kiss those eggs!
