Let me give you a mixing lesson. You start with one color (let's say red)... then you slowly add another color (let's say blue).... then you mix them together until you get the shade you like! You can add more of whichever color later, to get the result you want! In about 17 days, I will add more blue...

My first batch I had 7 shipped eggs. 2 were clear and 2 started to develop then died. I let them sit for 24 hours then started turning. 3 made it to lockdown. This batch I have 15 shipped eggs. One was cracked, I put wax on it and it started to develop but has a red ring now. So out of 14 eggs, without turning the first 5 days, 12 are doing great! I see little babies in each of them! I read this article and I wanted to follow it as close as possible to see how this batch would do. It says no turning for 7 days, but I didn't feel comfortable with that so I went with 5 and I'm happy I did. Please read it, I think it's very informative!

I may try going longer without turning next time, since many of mine seem to be quitting. (Mine rested for 24 hours then incubated without turning for 3 days) Purchasing eggs from a similar or higher altitude would probably help as well due to the increased permeability of the eggs. Hopefully I have a pair of Orloffs from the batch of chicks I picked up, so if all else fails, I can hatch my own eggs in the spring. (Knock on wood.)

Oh well, I'm still following along and my day 14 candling will be on Thursday. We'll see if I get anything, since a friend tried several batches of shipped eggs and only got a few, where her local hatches have been excellent.

On a sad note I found my black copper marans rooster dead in my backyard when I got off yesterday morning. Did not look like anything had been eaten there were some some displaced feathers around him. I have dogs that go out and mingle with my birds but have never had a problem with them. My Pitt will walk right into the coop and just hang out. Guess I need to make a yard dog out of him to protect my girls don't know how I am going to break it to him.
But I have 26 out of 30 eggs that look like they are gonna make it and hatch. Mixed emotions here in eastern nc tonight

They are Americana. The grey girl is gone to a show home. I don't do shows but did show her and she won her a blue ribbon. I still have the splash colored girl her tufts and beard are just beautiful.

All I can think is those facebook posts with whatshisname on them: I don't usually show chickens, but when I do, I win.

Went to home depot the other day and saw a 75 watt led that screws into a regular light socket that you can buy for $20 They did not have last year the thing had 750 lumens mine has 500 I bet that will light them up. the reason I like the box is my grip is not what it used to be I have crushed eggs in my hand thinking I wasn't holding them tight enough so squeeze a little harder no way I can hold the light and the egg and take a picture like Amy.

Mine is 650 Lumens. I had stated differently and apparently I was confused....don't say it SC. I guess it just takes a talented hand...

Killed but not eaten sounds like a dog. Sorry for your loss. I would love to free range, but with my different pure breeds and living so close to the woods, I have to keep them penned. I do build them very nice, large coops, and try to pen them at 10sqft/bird

Day 14 candle complete! All 15 were fertile! I had only 2 quitters! That means 13 are growing well. Saw lots of movement. I can't wait! It was also day 7 for my other shipped eggs and unfortunatley for those I have only 3/8 growing. It sucks. So far none of those were quitters the other 5 were just infertile. I am going to have to let my supplier know.

If you bought them from someone you don't know they are going say that it doesn't mean they were infertile. One of the reasons I haven't dared shipped eggs. You never know.

I'm sorry for the losses on here. I'm just building my flock now, from hatching eggs. So these are my babies that will be going outside eventually. I invested in a safe, good chicken coop for them. But my plan was to let them free range since I'm home all day. I keep wondering if this is a bad plan? Anyone have success with just a coop and no run?? I'm also very curious to see how Amy's hatch turns out. I'm wondering about the no turning after 14 days. I hatch shipped eggs, so I don't turn the first 5 days. I'm wondering if they'd get enough turning if I stopped at 14, interesting food for thought! Also considering getting a generator after reading this thread. I went to Walmart and bought these heat packs. I guess you squeeze them and they get warm/hot. My backup plan was to lay those on top of my eggs if we had a power shortage. They were under a buck each. Don't know if they'll work but I figured they would be better then nothing!

I'm curious too. I'm especially worried about the silkie and polish eggs being too small. They are developing great, but my worry is the end. I should have waited a couple weeks. The size I'm getting now I'm very satisfied with. The day 14 thing has been on my mind for a while now. Ever since I was looking at that chart and it said they turn toward the big end around day 14. I had always thought the turning took place after lockdown and thus why the norm was to stop then, I've been thinking about it. Logically it makes more sense to me to stop turning before they start positioning themself. So then I started wondering if it would help to keep from having malepositioned chicks. (Not that I usually do. I've only had one that was for sure messed up in there.) Just something that's been floating around in my head.

Yes, its hard to keep up with.... I'm also just building my first flock. I have a couple of old roosters that came from my sister-in-law, but the rest are new babies. The heat packs are great for hand warming, you shake them and they activate. They do require air to stay warm, so I have some from last fall's hunting, I think I'll try some in my empty bator to see what temps I can get with them. (Amy, I forgot to mention that part yesterday... I don't know if they will stay warm for very long without being shaken every so often, but it still could help!) They also make ones with a sticky side (LOVE those in my boots) they would be nice to stick inside the walls of the bator.

I don't have the hand warmers I have the heat wraps for sore muscles.sprains, strains that you peel and stick to the sore spot...lol I don't think they work the exact same way. Unless you are jumping up and down they really don't get shaken.

They say it's not neccessary to turn after day 14, but generally most people don't stop until lockdown. I've always turned up until lockdown. This time the eggs that I am only candling days 7/14/18, I will not turn on day 14. I'll candle and mark air cells and then leave them until the day 18 candle. The others basically will be turned just from the candling process.

Looks like I need to do some research and make a decision.

Candle 'em already WV! It won't hurt them, and what a thrill to see the beginnings of life in your hand! I have a power inverter (400W) It won't draw enough power off a battery to run a heat lamp, but I bet it would draw enough to run a bator. We're only talking 80W plus the fan. And you could always set the bator in the car, and keep the motor running. I think I paid $29. Cheap insurance policy for a batch of eggs.

I'm going to use my husbands in his truck of need be. Only problem is if he's at work in the quarry, two hours away, it's not too helpful. I don't know if I can put it in my car, it's not a big truck, just a Subaru outback but maybe it would work. The portable ones at home depot aren't too expensive. I can't buy it this week though, were re-doing our basement and I'm trying to save as much money as possible. I want another bathroom, haha!

30 hours into this hatch and I'm already wanting to candle! Lol but I did get started on my new candling box. I should be able to finish it tonite, I hope. Still pondering that theory of stopping turning after day 14. Might try that with half of my cochins. Sorry about your roo Fowling around. That sucks. How old was he?

If I only had one breed, or a barnyard mix, I would probably let them range, but I would buy a livestock guardian dog to keep the critters at bay. Properly trained dogs can be a godsend for chickens. A lot of people in my area have coops with no runs, but they also have dead chickens in the street. That's why I build large pens. I want them to have as much space as possible while also keeping them safe. With so many breeds, I can't even let them out to range, so I keep dedicated garden vegetables for them in the summer, and plant greens for the winter. They like kale best of all
