She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I'm very sorry to hear of both of your losses. It's hard losing a favorite, I lost my foundation Narragansett not to the injury that caused him to lose half of his lower leg (I made him a prosthesis and he got around fine), but to deep puncture wounds into his lungs and abdomen caused by a loose Malamute when he tried to protect his girls. I had to put him down. He was my baby, even as a grown tom he thought he was a lap turkey.

Awww... do you have any pics with the prosthesis? I bet that was amazing. Sorry for your loss.

Candle 'em already WV! It won't hurt them, and what a thrill to see the beginnings of life in your hand!

I have a power inverter (400W) It won't draw enough power off a battery to run a heat lamp, but I bet it would draw enough to run a bator. We're only talking 80W plus the fan. And you could always set the bator in the car, and keep the motor running. I think I paid $29. Cheap insurance policy for a batch of eggs.

I admit I snuck a peek at one this morning. Of course nothing to see lol! I will do a random one (or a few) each day too, but not picking individual ones. Candler addict here!

When my power went out during my duck hatch, I remembered we had a small inverter too. (hubby also has a larger one in his truck) I thought about taking everything out to the garage and hooking it up... but my hubby was out of town on business, my car was in the garage (no power = no garage door opening!) and the only key to get in a door to the garage was out of town in my hubby's pocket!!! UGH. He made it home the next day and we borrowed a generator and got my bator hooked up. Guess what my next big purchase was? 7000watt generator! Its actually a lawn mower/atv/generator. Google "Raven mower"... I can drive the thing right up on my front porch if it happens again when he's not home.

I'm still tweaking the design, and I need to decide what light I'm going to use. I think there are some laying around work that could probably find their way into my purse lol I usually use a Mini-Mag flashlight. LED and super bright. but I think I want to actually mount a light, like you did.
You need another design..... I'll put my thinking cap on....

Good thinking! I am going to try the tactical light on my varmint rifle for candling!

What I love about this thread is we all joke a lot is but when comes to our chickens we are very sincere about what we're saying . Its amazing how many of us are out here. the way Amy and Walnut WV and SC helped Colson was just so impressive what a great bunch of people.

Awww.... I wanna hug you....

They are Americana. The grey girl is gone to a show home. I don't do shows but did show her and she won her a blue ribbon. I still have the splash colored girl her tufts and beard are just beautiful.

Went to home depot the other day and saw a 75 watt led that screws into a regular light socket that you can buy for $20 They did not have last year the thing had 750 lumens mine has 500 I bet that will light them up. the reason I like the box is my grip is not what it used to be I have crushed eggs in my hand thinking I wasn't holding them tight enough so squeeze a little harder no way I can hold the light and the egg and take a picture like Amy.

Far as wounds WV didn't really see much. There was an area around his left upper rib area with feathers missing. No discernible bite marks looked around him and didn't see tracks. Most of the area has plenty of grass but he was close to the fence and they have it down to bare ground. I could see chicken tracks and that was it. Still trying to figure it out. Maybe he got in a fight with my older roo and died there? Just don't know I am pretty good at crime seen type stuff, I have been able to look at pts who have been shot and tell investigating officers what happened literally like there is a small piece of tent tape to his right upper scalp he was shot through a window kind of stuff, but didn't find any clue? Far as fighting with my older roo they never bothered each other ever. My pen is probably close to 125 feet by 50 or so and the coop is 8x16 so they can claim opposite sides so to speak

On a sad note I found my black copper marans rooster dead in my backyard when I got off yesterday morning. Did not look like anything had been eaten there were some some displaced feathers around him. I have dogs that go out and mingle with my birds but have never had a problem with them. My Pitt will walk right into the coop and just hang out. Guess I need to make a yard dog out of him to protect my girls don't know how I am going to break it to him.
But I have 26 out of 30 eggs that look like they are gonna make it and hatch. Mixed emotions here in eastern nc tonight
Killed but not eaten sounds like a dog. Sorry for your loss. I would love to free range, but with my different pure breeds and living so close to the woods, I have to keep them penned. I do build them very nice, large coops, and try to pen them at 10sqft/bird

30 hours into this hatch and I'm already wanting to candle! Lol but I did get started on my new candling box. I should be able to finish it tonite, I hope.
Still pondering that theory of stopping turning after day 14. Might try that with half of my cochins.

Sorry about your roo Fowling around. That sucks. How old was he?

I thought this was Amy. I said I wouldn't do it, but...

I really sorry to hear that I lost my best hen last night .the hard part is I was attached to her. I had nursed her back from a bad injury and she had a name. I going stop naming chickens glad you have eggs you hatch out of him.

I am down to 2 of my original barred rocks, and one of them is the only chicken that I have that will jump in my lap and sit with me for a while. The last few days she has been getting "that look". I know that any day now I will go home and she won't be there any more. I quit naming chickens 3 years ago, but Ruby is 5

They helped. I just added to the post count

SC I thought dog too when I first saw him laying there but didn't see any bite marks. We do have a cocker spaniel and she will get after the chickens if one of us happens to be outside otherwise you can put her out and watch from the window and she won't even pay them any mind. I have 10 hounds that are kept just beyond the coop and they would have raised holy crap if anything came in the yard. Just don't know. Guess I need CSI duplin county lol

A dog won't necessarily leave bite marks. Most of them aren't attacking with the intent to kill or eat, they just want to play, so they don't bite them hard enough to tear. Were there just feathers at the scene of the crime, or were there more scattered a little further around?
