She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Every time I think I'm going to get something done and stop reading this thread I see a zinger like this and I can't leave. We might have saved 40 chicks with this for the IT guy that was here last week. Won't know for another 10 days or so. Until he used his temp gun he didn't realize his readings were off and his eggs were 103. I hope he gives us an update. Read this: http://www.aviagen.com/assets/Tech_...ow_Tos/03HowTo3MeasureEggShellTemperature.pdf And then I use this:
LAMO! I know exactly what you mean! Saweeeeet! I'll have to try that with my next hatch! And I actually have one of those thermometers!!! :D I don't think temp is my problem, I think there's something going on at lockdown, but it'll be interesting to check!!

Hey Amy, go help this kid out: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/993772/does-this-egg-look-ok-the-membrane#post_15452059
He's got a chick with a pretty good zip, but it looks like the membrane is drying and the chick is probably stuck

I'll go look. Just got back on.

Well Ive now read the first 1100 post and needed to comment on the large coop/runs mentioned.

We found 1 way to get a good chicken coop for keeping predators out. When you think its done, put a cat in there and lock it in. put the cats favorite treat about 2 feet from the coop. go away. come back later - if the cat is no longer in the coop - you need to fix your design. if it is - well done, you now just need to make sure the wire is too thick for a rat or fox to eat.

Amy, so, day 7, I've finally got the styro bator to 101.5, had to change it every day even though its in the basement.

Average weight loss is 5.39%, should be 4.33%, high is 8.6%, lo is 3.66%...is that on target?

I have my temps correct now, but I'm trying more oxygen this time. I had no airflow on my DIY incubator the first couple rounds and I was loosing 50% at lockdown.

I'd call it okay and maintain moderate humidity until day 14...in my incubator, moderate is 25-38%. Whatever it takes NOT to grow the air cells too fast, but to allow them to grow. You can candle day 10 and see how you are doing.

Weight and air cells go hand in hand, you have to lose water weight to gain air cell space. Too much of either is a bad thing but the band of acceptable is pretty wide.
