🐝💗Our Backyard Beekeeping Journey!💗🐝

@asorum, do you have honeybees? Not a requirement! I see you're in Alaska. I'm not sure if honeybees go that far north....?

Today might warm up to near 50... I plan to look at our hive and see if any of the girls are out.
We have a few hives and live on the coast. The temperatures here are not too extreme. It’s about 31F right now. The biggest problem with overwintering bees here is the time they are cooped up in the hive, before temps come up above 50F again. The hives are insulated and they can handle the cold. We keep the hives in the high tunnel for the winter, that also helps.

I'm not a bee keeper,, but do follow this thread, for the knowledge gained.
Explain what a high tunnel is :idunno
A high tunnel is basically an unheated greenhouse. Steel tubing and plastic cover. Falls between an open field and a heated greenhouse.

OK,, thanks. Just another question for you from Alaska. Do you keep chickens??

drstratton

also has a chicken thread. :thumbsup

We have one old hen left that lives in the high tunnel. I’m setup for bigger numbers now, but stuck finding fertile eggs. Probably have to wait for spring. I’ll get in trouble again for the wrong topic in the thread.
