She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I just candled again (it's day 10) found another cracked one :( so now down to 31. Our oldest said they look like a lava lamp. Air cells look like they got maybe 1 millimeter bigger. Some look like large dark orange blobs and other smaller & lighter orange blobs. Still not 100% sure what I am looking at lol. Wish I knew someone with experience close by to check them.

What is the average success rate for a first timer?
Somewhere between 0 and 100%. Sorry if that sounds vague, but... that's the reality of it. There are so many variables. What are you hatching? What are you using for an incubator? Still air, forced air? Calibrated thermometers/hygrometer? How did you calibrate? Where did your eggs come from? Temp? Humidity? At this stage, you should see a lot of activity in your eggs, if the lighting is good, and they are chicken eggs, if they are not blue, green or extremely dark brown eggs, you can see the chick swimming in the egg around day 7 - 10. Have you gone to the learning center and looked at the candling pics under "hatching" There are lots of articles there. Look for "hatching 101".

I had a RIR pullet just like that! See me outside and come running to hop on my lap. She would also fall asleep in my lap while being petted. But the dog became jealous and had her way with her >: / dog should thank her lucky stars she (the dog) is still around.

Is that your sister's husband, or your DHWSO's brother?
Day 11. I usually don't candle until lockdown, and intentionally set my eggs to hatch on a workday

Given those 2 choices I would opt for 99.6, but after double checking all of my temps my display is actually set at 100.0.
The foam strips come with the EX model, not the Advance, so I don't have them. I would think that foam would take up too much room, but they may be thinner than I think. The metal rails work just fine on their own, unless you are an angry drunken Canadian computer programmer ;)
When you order the EX pump kit, it comes with the pump kit, but also some upgrades for the Advance which include the foam pads for the rails and a pad for the bottom of the egg tray. They are neat additions, but not necessary. I may use them if I had them, may not. If I were WV, I wouldn't even mess with the humidity pump until lockdown, if at all. Now, it would be great for wintertime hatches, where the humidity is so much more difficult to maintain

I have no sisters

Guys, tonight is the night for the peachicks to go. I'm getting all nervous and anxious over here. I'm sending them with a 20lb bag of food and their stuffed teddy bear they sleep with. Man...why did I want to hatch them again!! Wish them luck, they're gonna need it!

Good luck to all! Glad to hear you're on the list for whites and grays... :D

Thank You! Love them things Because theyre so loud, i Know that blue duck is a hen u can hear her from inside! Theyre 3-4 months, and ive been watchin them to sex them, theyre all pretty loud, again, except him. Also, if i pick up any duck, he charges me hehe its funny he gets in a little tizzy

Sounds like you mighta got lucky! At that age their voices should be set, so loud = duck, raspy = drake... would love to have those, but think I'm sticking with my mini ducks... less destruective, lol... :D

If you had a trio of Ayams, I bet you'd keep them triple caged. Those things are awfully pricey. Just dye a nice RIR...
They are!!!! That is the actual breed I am working towards.
Seriously, what is the deal with those chickens? Are their eggs phenomenal, are they great to eat, or is it just because they are rare? I'm rare, too, and ain't nobody beating down my door...
There are plenty of rednecks in the sea darling!!!! Many more of you than them. :lau
I like that they are so black that they look like a shadow. They just freak my eyes out and I love it. They just look fake and awesome.
They have black meat as well. I think that would be a cool speciality esp in a restaurant.
For $50/chick they'd better hatch 10/1 pullets to roos.
Well that's really cheap. If get chicks from a good breeder....like GFF your looking at paying almost $200 per chick. The Ogye and Hmong Eggs that I tried to hatch.....well those chicks go for $50 a piece straight run.
You'd better come up with something better than that 9300. I ain't sending my aigs to no death chamber:gig
I can completely understand. That's why I am skipping out on the ship a thon.
Nice Eggs!!!!

Started with 36 eggs from our hens, found a total of 5 cracked eggs so down to 31. They are almost 6 months old now - 2 Rouen & 1 Peking. I wanted them to sit but they find foraging much more fun. I have a Styrofoam still air with a turner from Farm Inovations. I have the thermometer that came with it& ccalibrated with my candy thermometer and a digital one that matches the calibrated one that also has a humidity gauge. There is no water in the incubator because it is so humid here in Northern Michigan. The humidity gauge has been between 40-50%. I wasn't sure if the movement was them or my shakey hand lol. I will check out the learning center for sure, not sure why I didn't think of that. When I first started DH was like "WHAT are we going to do with 36 ducklings!?!" Honestly I would be shocked for more than 50%. I think thats all your questions lol

Thank you everyone!! (I ran out of thumbs up) I'm worried about them being in a new, strange barn all night. They were scared and my neighbor thought I was absolutely nuts for insisting he put their stuffed animal in with them but he did it to appease me. At least I can see them everyday if I wanted. And sorry for the super long multi-quote. Baby would not go to sleep!

My cajuga duckies have doubled or tripled in size since i last posted them so im going to attempt to load pictures...

Im pretty sure this is a drake, but he is the Only one with feathers like this out of 7, i cant be that lucky w them can i??

Here he goes Following me Inside! Now because of your experience :) im kinda strict about this, they werent raised in my home like those peas... I cant let any bird get more attached than those things are!

Love it!

Wow! Those are really beautiful!

What about your chickens vs the wife's family???

:hugs   I know that''s going to be hard for you after all the bonding and raising. I feel for you!

I keep finding my little black pullet- Raven on my back porch when I go to go out. I love her, but she is my trouble maker. Will not stay in the run. She thinks she's a dog and wants to follow you around the yard. That's when she's not pretending to be a parrot perched on your shoulder. My ee pullet thinks she's a cat and will hop right in your lap and wants to be petted like a cat. She'll even go to sleep while you are petting her...lol

Had a fairly productive day. Made up a batch of home made mozzarella sticks. (I've gotten rather fond of them.) I freeze them then I can pull 5-6 out when I want some. I made 5 dozen peanutbutter blossom cookies. My son loves home made pizza, so I made him that for supper and my father some fried clams.  Let both coops out (not together though) for some free ranging in the yard. it's hard to tell the youngest from the middles now. They grow so fast.  Tomorrow I need to tackle the play room because I want to move all our homeschool stuff in there.  I got half of it done a week ago and lost the motivation to finish. We officially start school the 31st so I guess if I want it done I'd better get a move on.

Good luck! I've been in back to school mode too. Got the kids bunk beds, re-arranged their whole room, hung up new pictures, new bed linens, and like $80 in back to school supplies! Haven't even shopped for clothes or shoes yet. I'll be broke by the end of the month!

I felt the exact same way when I started candling!! I wished I had someone to show me everything I was supposed to be seeing. You'll be a pro in no time, trust me!

Thank goodness my daughter still fits her clothes from last year. I had to buy new clothes towards the end of the school year because she out grew everything. She now wears the same size shoe as me and she is only 8. :( So for a while we can share shoes.....then she will have bigger feet than me. Poor baby gets it from her daddy.
