I have a problem not sure what kind of egg .could be SLW or GLW or BSL but this is a first for me . day five and the air cell is not on top. the egg is developing the middle picture shows it .and I have another like this.

Great pics K. Cell looks pretty big for day 5? Was it stored crooked and maybe the air cell settled there? Will be curious to see how those turn out.

Stopped at home long enough to swap clothes and put eggs in lockdown.

2 project turkey in the Polyhatch at 66%, 3 Narragansett in a Brinsea 20 at 72%. Air cells are drawing down nicely.

The Brinsea had varied a little from my previously set temp, from 99.5 to 99.2. A twitch of the knob brought it to 100.2. I twitched it back hoping it settles by morning.

(Like other locals have said, never thought I'd be hoping for more rain during the winter around here... Yearly average is 100 inches, with probably 80% between Halloween and Valentine's Day. The last 3-4 years, we've been getting maybe a quarter to a third of that (that might be an exaggeration--may be closer to half, I'm not sure). Not that I mind rain that much in normal years--at least not the non-horizontal kind!)

I swear, sometimes the 8 hour difference between my friends in the UK and I is less frustrating than the 3 hours between the coasts! (I gave up long ago with keeping timezones straight across the equator, since daylight savings/not switches the opposite way, and threw me all off--even before I realized that Australia has 3 timezones, and I had friends in all 3 at one point, which is why I could never keep times straight

Doesn't help that I refuse to cheat--I keep the conversions in my head.)

I dumped the coop liter into the run today!! So you just put all the raked leaves in the run? Do they flatten out? I'm just picturing the leaves being higher then my silkies!!

I finally set eggs again last night. 19 possible OE. From my Marans roo x EE/Leghorn mix. They have pea combs so I'm hoping the chicks have the olive egg (blue) gene. I added a fan to my bator so we will have to see how that goes. Can't wait for my Brinsea Spot Check to get here.

ETA: Since the mama is half leghorn the chicks could get the white egg gene right? All the eggs in the bator are light blue.

Nope, should be green egg layers.

White is no gene for color. Any color or tint gene overrides.
Blue is a shell color. It's persistent but can be diluted or tinted.
Brown is a tint. It's painted on top of the shell color, so with a white egg and brown egg layer you get a brown egg layer, blue egg and brown egg layer you get a green egg layer.

You can play with shades within the colors and tints to come up with "gray", "pink", pale cream, and a whole basketful of shades.

I like the way these guys are turning out so far. By looking at combs I'm guessing 5 cockerels and 6 pullets. I hope it stays that way.



Most are all black and white, but there are 3 with brown on the wings.

Looking great. I can't believe how they've grown. Some of that brown may molt out, but like Ravyn said, I hear the mossies lay the darker eggs

That's the beauty of a forum. Ask 20 different people and you may get 20 different answers...........And with 20 different methods you still may come close to the same hatch rate!

That's the whole point of this thread. We all do it different ways with similar results, good or bad. We are sharing and learning from each other

So, when I do get eggs for my Octagon, I'll be turning it manually. I know that, to turn it, I simply, well, turn it onto a different face. I only use the bottom 3 faces, right? Do I have it sit on the bottom, flat face, or do I rotate it past the flat bit directly to each angled bottom bit? If you can see what I mean.

I'd say it would depend on how many times a day you tilt it... only 3, I'd go with just each side... 5 or more and I'd go side, flat, other side... but for nighttime I'd always make sure it was one side and the next night, the other side... JMO, though...

Again, I totally agree with Ravyn on this one. If you are turning 3 times a day, I would turn it on the sides and skip the middle. Doing that will alternate your nighttime sides, just like she said. The autoturner turns further than you would think, I think it may turn a little further than the flat edges. As long as you only fill your wells 3/4 full, you don't get waterfalls. If I were turning manually, I would take out the tray, tilt the incubator on its side edge, and fill the channel then so you know exactly how much you can put in without overflow

I agree, it seems that dryer would help with aircell stability... but then.... what do I know. I've never tried to hatch a shipped egg. You might contact Sally Sunshine, or Ozexpat about this issue. As a matter of fact, how bout inviting both of them over to this thread for a conversation? I'd suggest that if we do, keep the "humor" to a minimum.

@ozexpat are you becoming stuffy? ha ha ha this post made me chuckle! I quite enjoy Oz's dry humor and straight forwardness. I respect him for it, I agree with him that his thread is his tale and an enjoyable read, his Diary to be shared! He is quite the busy man for idle chat, but he and I both enjoy good conversation, we tend to enjoy educational discussions that can help others along with our own endeavors. Love that man so much can you tell? He is a supportive, knowledgeable, and loving friend from our first private message. Anyway... carry on BYC is a forum! I missed BYC and everyone here, I had to spread into some health support groups for a while to help me understand my health, healing and to be honest, just needed help coping with the depression illness can bring. Sunshine was being lost very fast for me, I need help bringing that sunshine back!

K yall, I'm still at a cross roads, don't know what I should do, so I want to ask for a few more opininons. The DAC's (detached/loose air cells) should I let them rest in the incubator, fat end straight up, for a couple days or keep the turner going and hope for the best or let the DAC's rest and keep turning the good eggs by hand or... any other suggestions? It's day 5, 1 pm today starts day 6 which is in 4 hours. From the research I did online last night it seems these guys chances are grim and very slim to none so I'm thinking it may not be worth the struggle and the stress to the other eggs to move them all around. I'm thinking leave them in the turner and hope for the best but wanted to hear a few more opinions.
