She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

What else is "happening" on BYC? Not near as many people on our local thread right now, I found the contests that are going on, only did the caption one though, as I do not have any good images for some of the others or willpower to go take any :/  why isnt there a sleeping emoticon or am I missing it?

Seems BYC has slowed down a lot last couple months... you just missed the Calendar pic submissions, although I think the Other Poultry pic submissions is going til the 15th... most of the swaps have stalled, too much heat and molts going on... and yep, need that emoticon... and several others... :gig

Sally, here's what you said in a message:
"as far as weighing shipped eggs.... answer this.....
how do you know how much weight your egg lost since hatch, shipping and settling? hmmmm food for thought..... "

I didn't think about weight loss before setting after lay. Should I even bother weighing for the rest of the incubation period? Anyway to estimate weight loss for the first few days?

oops I just answered you in the message... I am not supposed to answer my messages but point out to post openly as to help others.. But I always help anyways.... bad girl I am!

Thats what I was getting at....

in all honesty, no matter WHO sends you eggs, you really dont have a clue as to their age, what humidity they encounter, but more so, if they were packed in newspaper or some other type of methods that actually draw weight out of them fast.

I never weigh shipped eggs because of such, it basically makes it guess work anyway! You incubate enough you get to know the "look" the eggs need to have at certain stages. If your not seasoned your best bet is to keep comparing visually, but I always tell everyone, SET YOUR own eggs and sell the chicks later on, this gives you the perfect opportunity to actually weigh and learn what % looks like what.

I hope that makes sense, its so hard to get stuff on "paper" at times

Yes, 100%!! I just posted those questions on the thread. Maybe copy and paste because that explains it perfectly!

I have a theory that some routes or postal hubs are worse than others. Of course, packing makes the biggest difference I think!

Don't think that is a theory, but a fact, lol... every single box I've received that had to go through the Memphis hub came entirely scrambled... every single one... and they go to 1 PO there, then transfer to another before leaving Memphis, and that takes an extra day... if they go through Nashville hub, they're ok though...

Yes definitely some are worse than others, Airtravel, packing, and so many things...
HOWEVER.... I will always believe that its the person who sends the eggs fault and the AGE/health of the laying hens (which in turn is the sellers fault too)

....
OMG DID I JUST SAY THAT!!! Now I am starting trouble again...... AGAIN....I will get into actual packing and shipping at some other time...

We did a test here, and you may want to try it as well so you understand how tough an egg REALLY IS!

we shook 5 eggs that were just laid (lets call it day one fresh out of the hens kisser)
we shook 5 eggs two days old
we shook 5 eggs, 3,4,5,6,and 7 days old..... (all hens at 12 months old)

What happened or DIDNT happen would surprise many...

Now we all should know that during egg storage, the physical/chemical changes of the yolk and albumen are affected and PH increases each day which leads to weakness of the membrane etc.
With this in mind, days 1-4 eggs are VERY VERY VERY VERY HARD TO SHAKE THE AIR CELL LOOSE. And I am talking arm weakening attempts. (my kids couldnt even shake them loose!)
So after doing this little testing you too will realize that FRESH EGGS from a good healthy laying hen is the FIRST important part of shipping an egg......

I have posted many times about shaking an egg... not sure anyone ever did it and come back to chat with me!

Gotta run kiddos say its pool time on their day off!

I just got word that a doz eggs I shipped got received without any breaks, cracks or air cell damage at all!

Interesting stuff. When you get a minute I have a question regarding weighing vs monitoring air cells. I monitor air cells in order to know how to adjust my humidity and have awesome results with my hatches (all local eggs-no shipped). I have never weighed and have no intrest in weighing. However, we have had a couple people on here try to weigh and monitor air cells for the same incubation only to find that their air cells had good, progression and were where they "needed" to be (according to the egg graphs/pictorials) but the weighing would reveal either not enough weight loss or too much. Do you consider weighing a more adequate measure of monitoring? I've seen a couple articles (outside of BYC) that dissed the air cell monitoring as not being an accurate source of moisture loss monitoring. Personally, I find it the easiest method and for me it works great so I'm not about to change, but I thought your thoughts might help others that are weighing and finding discrepancies with weight vs what they are seeing with air cells.

I rarely even candle, but I can answer that question. Tracking air cells is your perception of what you see compared to a chart that has been drawn. Weighing eggs is more "accurate" because you are using known numbers that can be measured to achieve an ideal percentage of weight loss. I can't give an opinion on which has better results, because I don't do either one :gig
