She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I had no idea. Really! I was just trying to catch up and then I was like... I guess I'm thinking of Marans where you might have only one roo that you want breeding so that you know what to fix if things aren't working out. I guess with a lot of breeds it wouldn't matter as much.
Ideally, yes, you only want 1 roo per breeding pen... but also ideally you want several different pens for a single type of purebred stock... whether you are breeding separate lines or trying to pin down issues or hens who throw better quality, etc... but that's not practical for most on here, and I know SC can't do that due to prior established birds... so you work with what you can... plus, his are Am's and from ggod lines, so they won't need as intense work as others might...
:gig Fits and spurts On a normal day, it's hopping from around 9 until lunch. It slows considerably until 3 or 4, then picks up again in the afternoons. My busy periods change from day to day, so sometimes I will just be in here stirring the pot. The 75% for lockdown that I think you are referring to is the parade percentage. There's a certain guy on this thread, awesome guy, that will throw parades after hatches, but certain criteria have to be met. From lockdown, if you hatch 75% of shipped eggs you get a parade, but the number is 85% for your own eggs. And just to pacify that crybaby Ravyn, the percentage has been dropped to 50% for eggs that are shipped to a part of the world where another language is spoken Speak of the devil :gig Yes, I do have that chart, and that's how I decided I wanted black roos in the pen. I don't want a ton of splash, but I would like a few, so it would make sense to keep a blue in the pen if I could. Going by my customer base, I will rarely, if ever, sell birds to be shown or bred to show. The splash are pretty, and I'm sure they will be a great seller as layers, but I don't want many of them. I have the room to expand the run, but really don't want to. The more feasible solution in the future is to phase out another of my breeds and convert it to another Am pen. I have 7 pens, but really only 2 breeds that I am culling, and to be honest, my BCM should probably be scrapped and start over. If I had known what this would become when I got started, things would have been done differently, but now I'm shifting gears from a backyard full of pets to trying to produce some higher quality birds. There is some sentimental attachment to a lot of birds that are there, and until they start dying off, I don't see any movement into those pens
So for now, why not keep all the boys you want to keep together? Blacks and blue... but have an option of removing the blue boy to elsewhere (like for OE's) if they become to scrappy or overbreed? Can't hurt to try it for a while to see and since they're still young it's best to try before the hormones kick into high gear... another tip I found works well is to keep some older hens in with them to teach them good manners... hens that don't put up with any s**t, but aren't bullies either...
My boys were raised together, and tussled as juveniles, but established an early pecking order and junior accepts his role. However, when my Narri tom moved in and started mating hens, the big guy had a real issue with that and had many bloody battles (his blood). The tom would just pin his head to the ground while grabbing his comb, and when he quit struggling he'd be released, then he'd get up and fight again. Not a quick learner... And that color chart is cool, helpful, yet perplexing. Color genetics are interesting, more so now that I am hatching such a rainbow of colors from just a few selections of parent stock.
I've had some that just aren't very bright... my BCM roo got into the Silkie pen and they whomped on him... found him hiding in their coop... didn't matter that he was so big all he had to do was step on them, but he's not a real manly man... :/ Color chart only really works if the colors aren't mixed to begin with... mixing black splits with blues and splashes can cause some weird results down the line as well... that's one of the reasons I dropped BBS and am staying with black splits and Lavs...

The only thing we get in our yard is red breasted robin. They did find a duck in our state with AI though so it's starting to move.

We've had Canadian Geese flying overhead all week. They follow the river south, although we get some that stick around here. The Sandhill Cranes over-winter here, and hang out in the fields and orchards near the Bosque. I think they'll arrive sometime in October. We get them in the yard sometimes - Beautiful!

Only AI in NM was a dead cinnamon teal duck found last April in the wetlands preserve south of us. Love all the wildlife, but hope they keep their germs to themselves.

I have a EE/Leghorn mix pullet that only started laying about 3 weeks ago. Two days now I go home and she's in a nextbox making veloceraptor noises. I take her and put her on the ground and she just holds the nesting pose.

Can she really be broody!?

Guess you'll just have to wait and see - maybe she's faking it or just practicing.

I've been reading up on the genetics of spangling and mottling. Wow, too many genetic factors for this brain to take in, but I'll get it eventually. Good thing I'm just doing this for fun and to keep me out of trouble!

My multi-quote got eaten by the phone! I hate that...wouldn't go back another page....
That float is awesome!!  Hope you enjoyed the parade!  SC pulled out all the stops this time.  He's getting pretty fancy with the parades.

85% of locked down number for local non-shipped eggs...  75% for shipped eggs.

Don't leave... some of us just had to actually do some real work occasionally... ;)

Great job on the parade, SC! Loved it!! Congrats on the awesome hatch, Wv!!

Awww thanks again!  It seriously did put a smile on my face today.  :love

She asked about ducks/geese though... I would think you would throw a parade for those also?  And turkeys, quail,.... whatever gets hatched!  :D

And peafowl....just sayin...

Anything but those horrible peafowl. I just can't bring myself to do it...

Darn!

I can't believe it!!! I screwed up my own parade

I have been waiting for this parade for 2 weeks, had the opening post all planned out, and forgot about it while setting up the band. I never said what the band was playing
he.gif

I'm not going to post it here, but I'm going back to edit the first post with the "Push to start" button. Anyone that cares can check back in a few minutes to see what it was. It may seem silly to you guys, but it was a big part of the parade for me, and I blew it
