I have to ask, do you have calibrated thermometers and hygrometers in there? When they are zipping, what happens? They stop half way for how long? If I have a zipper that stops for more then 20-30 mins, I finish the zip by opening up the shell just enough for them to push out.
I'm in the same boat. Dad has heart failure for a year now. He raised pigeons my whole life and I never really took an interest. Now that I'm doing chickens we have so much to talk about and share! So it's such a shame, he probably won't make it through this winter and I don't even want to process that fact! So I really do understand exactly what you're saying!! :hugs
That's so sad but so awesome! She was such a beautiful baby! I'm sure she'll be very happy now with more of her kind! And how perfect that you know she'll be a beloved pet. Great news!

like I said I was new to hatching...no I wasn't aware I needed any other thermometers in there, but I will sure invest in some. I didn't set up the bator either. They did so I know they didn't put anything in there....they just adjusted the controls on the outside. Zipping most had just started to zip and got shrink wrapped. If I had caught it I would have helped. I checked humidity one day before I went to town. Was gone an hour and it dropped 30% and my chick died while unzipping. Its in a back room with no drafts or air conditioners, but it stays comfortable in there because we leave the door open. So I'm not sure what's going on with it. All I know is I don't like this batir , I'd rather buy a new one that I know I didn't leave eggs in ect...he just really didn't take care of it. My nephew told me he would leave the dead chicks in it too...so yeah not paying 650$ for this thing...wish I had known that in the first place.

It's a wise husband who will take the time to listen to his wife vent without trying to "fix it". More often than not, women just want to share their feelings, know that they've been heard, and then move on to the next subject. When a husband listens, the time he took to do so will come back to him 100 fold in bonus points! Glad that feeding the chooks is not the high light of your life!

I agree with you. You don't want a bator that has been a cess pool of death before. Get rid of that thing. Also, just b/c someone adjusts it, that doesn't mean that it does not need to be adjusted again. Bators are finicky, and some may need to be adjusted between every batch set.

I agree with you.  You don't want a bator that has been a cess pool of death before.  Get rid of that thing.  Also, just b/c someone adjusts it, that doesn't mean that it does not need to be adjusted again.  Bators are finicky, and some may need to be adjusted between every batch set.

honestly I think he thought that because I didn't know ANYTHING about Bator's and hatching that I was an easy $ made. What he doesn't know is I learn fast, research what I don't understand, and take lots of advice. My hubby bought me a little 48 egg cheapo Bator to use until he can get me a new one. He told me he was only buying one more so I better get the one I want.....soooooo...I set the bar high I want a 300 egg capacity Brinsea. 1800.00$ price tag but he said I better get the one I want....I know, I know, I'm a smarty pants...lol. I would be happy with 180 egg capacity. I order a lot of shipped eggs, I'm trying to establish different breeds.

I will take pics for you when they start to hatch, and yes, just like popcorn. I will stalk the bator until the first one hatches, Come back an hour or so later and have 20 running around. I love my quail, they are very multipurpose.
 
Anybody want to see updated pics of my babies? I had to take pics for my records, figured i would share?
