Wanna bet? My best broody is worth her weight in gold, no joke... 3 batches this year and only lost 1 this last batch and it was my fault, not hers... left the pool out... :/

No broodies here, just a bunch of teenagers and some really ratty oldsters.  Didn't know a hen could molt out all of her flight feathers at once - she has just one or two one each side and looks terrible.  Coop looks like there was a massive pillowfight.

Yep, I will always give them a first try... Marans already has a batch, Silkies are sitting on their feet right now, but gonna give them the Silkie eggs I got started in the bator, and the Am just claimed a half doz today, lol...

Pillow fights, lol... mine keep looking like a predator took someone out in the run... feathers galore... :/

10-4 on the pillow fight. My rooster looks like someone tried to hang him; half the feathers on his neck are missing...down to bare skin. Anybody heard of Naked Necks being used for sex-linking? 

Don't think NN's work for sex links... a couple people tried them but think they're too mixed up breed and color wise to work...

What breed would y'all suggest for the best chance of getting a broody hen you could depend on, if something like that even exists? In the 10 years or so that I've kept RIR's and/or Red Sex-links, I've not had but one that would set long enough to hatch a clutch. I want something that'll take care of her chicks, yet not be a bully in the general population, and big enough to handle 6-10 large eggs. Any favorites?

My Spitz has potential, she was good at sitting and she's wonderful with the banties babies, (she's like the cool aunt), but with her own new babies, she sucked. She wanted to be right out there in the run and scratching dirt 24 hours after hatch, in the cold, ignoring her babies. She lost one and I have the other in here with me.

IMO, Silkies are great setters but only so-so as mamas... they're good if you keep them in a totally enclosed area and separated from all the others... they're too big of pushovers for my liking... my Araucana bantam and OEGB are super little mamas, but small bodies for setting...

I just realized something... I set 31 flockin Call eggs... if they all hatch, that is 31 poop machines on 2 webs...

Oh, and I ordered some more eggs today too...

Just a heads-up for any newbies that happen along in here:

If you buy a coop kit, like I did because I needed one quick (long story for another time), be sure the chicken door(s) slide up & down, rather than side-to-side...unless, of course, it's hinged on one side

. I didn't think of that when I bought mine. Now I have to clean out the track that the door slides in just about every time I close up at night; the bedding & poop gets raked into it by the birds' coming & going, and it won't slide. A royal pain in the butt, especially when it's dark or raining.

Anybody know what became of the guy from Utah who hung out in here up until a month or so ago & used to give SC good-natured grief whenever he could? Can't remember his name, but his avatar was a picture of himself. I really liked what he had to say when he got serious.

Get a piece of 1x4 and fasten it on edge on the inside against the edge of the door along the bottom... should help keep the track clear, and they'll be able to step over it...
